Bei der Forschungsförderung in China geht es um HIV/AIDS-Prävention mit Sexworkern in Guangxi, einer Provinz mit einer der höchsten Ansteckungsraten (Dr. Xiaoming Li, professor and director of the university's Prevention Research Center, to "establish and evaluate whether an alcohol and HIV intervention center can assist in reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS among sex workers in China).

Das Forschungsprojekt wurde durch ein wissenschaftliches Auswahlverfahren bestätigt und verfolgt dieselben Ziele wie auch die Gesundheitsbehörde in den USA (Preventing HIV infection is NIH’s highest priority for HIV-related research. We need to explore a range of research avenues in vulnerable populations around the world to learn the best ways to control the transmission of HIV.)


Der republikanische Politiker hat hier einen komplexen Sachverhalt von Forschungs-Finanzierung verdreht und mißbraucht, um mit der stigmatisierten Prostitution den politischen Gegner anzuklagen.

Er wollte das Stigma instrumentalisieren, um Wählerstimmen zu fischen, und ist dabei gleichzeitig auf diesen platten rechtskonservativen Konsensbildungsmechanismus der Putophobie (Sexworker-Feindlichkeit) hereingefallen. Das Portal gibt ihm dafür die schlechteste Note: "Pants on Fire."

Pikanter Prozess um Eskortservice

In Detroit bereitet sich ein mutmaßlicher Zuhälter auf seinen Prozess vor. Pikantestes Mittel der Verteidigung: eine Kundenliste mit Namen einflussreicher Politiker.

In den USA geht die Angst um. Die Reichen und Einflussreichen aus Washington, Florida, vor allem aber aus Michigan - sie alle fürchten sich vor den nächsten Wochen. Jedenfalls jene, deren Namen auf einer streng geheimen Liste stehen. Es ist die Kundenliste von Miami Companions, einem exklusiven Eskortservice, der mittlerweile vom FBI durchleuchtet wird. Mindestens 30.000 Namen sollen auf dieser Liste stehen - mitsamt Terminen und sexuellen Vorlieben.

Firmenchef Gregory Carr baut nun ausgerechnet auf dieser Liste seine Verteidigung auf: Er muss sich im März vor Gericht verantworten. Der Prozess dürfte pikant werden.

Carr gebührt die zweifelhafte Ehre, zusammen mit seiner Frau Laurie "einen der größten Prostitutionsringe der USA" aufgebaut zu haben, wie es das FBI formuliert. Seit 2001 leitete das Paar das Unternehmen Miami Companions. In Florida hatte die landesweit tätige Firma ihren Stammsitz, besonders viele Kunden kamen zuletzt aus der Region um Detroit.

Teilweise hat sich die zahlungskräftige Klientel über Jahre hinweg regelmäßig von jungen Damen begleiten lassen, zum Dinner, ins Wochenende und vor allem ins Bett.

Die Carrs residierten derweil in noblen Strandapartments und pflegten enge Kontakte ins Showgeschäft, in die Businesswelt und in die Politik. Als Laurie Carr eines Tages den Wunsch hatte, den Präsidenten mal persönlich zu treffen, besorgte ihr ein guter Bekannter aus Washington eine Einladung zu einem Dinner mit George W. Bush. Alles kein Problem, wenn man die richtigen Leute kennt.

Im Januar 2009 war dann plötzlich Schluss, das lukrative Geschäft flog auf: Verdeckte Ermittler beobachteten, wie die Pornodarstellerin Brianna Beach, bürgerlich Melissa Sternberg, in einem Hotelzimmer in Detroit im Stundentakt Herrenbesuche empfing. Jeder Kunde, berichten die "Detroit News", habe 500 Dollar gezahlt, 300 davon durfte Frau Beach behalten. Der Rest ging an die Carrs. Beiden wird nun Zuhälterei und Geldwäsche in etlichen Fällen vorgeworfen

Die Carrs, mittlerweile geschieden, belasten einander nun gegenseitig. Dabei kommen immer neue, schmutzige Details ans Licht - mit erheblichen Risiken für ihre Kundschaft. Ein ranghoher Lobbyist aus Washington sei Stammkunde gewesen, hat Laurie Carr bereits ausgeplaudert. Sie hat mit den Behörden einen Deal gemacht, ein Geständnis abgelegt und fungiert nun als Kronzeugin gegen ihren Ex-Mann. Dem drohen allein für die schwerwiegendste Anklage 20 Jahre Haft und 500.000 Dollar Bußgeld.

"Ich habe noch nichts gesehen, das meinen Mandanten belastet", sagte Gregory Carrs Anwalt Paul DeCailly der "Detroit Free Press". Sein Mandant sei kein Zuhälter, und er habe auch "nie jemanden dazu verleitet, irgendetwas zu tun". Gregory Carr sei lediglich Miteigentümer des völlig legalen Begleitservice Miami Companions gewesen. Für die illegale Zuhälterei aber sei allein dessen Ex-Frau Laurie verantwortlich.

Allein schon, dass dem Anwalt vor zwei Wochen der Zugriff auf die eigentlich beschlagnahmte Kundenliste erlaubt wurde, ist ein erster Sieg: Bis zuletzt hatte das FBI versucht, die Herausgabe des Beweisstücks zu verhindern - schließlich hat die Bundespolizei kein Interesse daran, die Namen von Washingtoner Größen im Gerichtssaal zu hören.

Am 25. März soll der Prozess beginnen. Dann wird sich zeigen, ob DeCailly prominente Kunden tatsächlich als Zeugen vorlädt. Dass er sich einige dieser Herren persönlich vorknöpfen wolle, hat er bereits angekündigt.

Super Bowl zieht Tausende Huren an

150.000 Fans an einem Ort: Der Super Bowl ist Höhepunkt der US-Sportsaison. Daran wollen auch Zuhälter verdienen. Doch Polizei und Menschenrechtsgruppen kämpfen gegen illegale Prostitution bei dem Mega-Ereignis - mit Zivilfahndern und Streetworkern.

Arlington - In Texas dreht sich derzeit alles um Football. Am Sonntag stehen sich im Meisterschaftsfinale der Profiliga NFL die Pittsburgh Steelers und die Green Bay Packers gegenüber. Den Super Bowl, wie das Endspiel heißt, werden bis zu 150 Millionen Menschen im Fernsehen verfolgen. Und etwa 150.000 Fans sind in das Ballungsgebiet gereist, das die Städte Dallas, Fort Worth und Arlington bilden.

Doch nicht alle kommen nur, um das Spiel zu verfolgen. Das Sportspektakel hat eine dunkle Seite: Es zieht illegale Prostitution an, in vielen Fällen Zwangsprostitution. Polizei und Menschenrechtsgruppen bereiten sich vor, Zuhälter und Freier dingfest zu machen.
"Wir haben eigens die Sittenpolizei aufgestockt", sagt Polizeisprecher Kevin Jansen in Dallas. "Wir werden Beamte in Zivil in diversen Hotels stationieren, um nach Hinweisen für Zwangsprostitution zu suchen." Vor dem Stadion in Arlington sollen Plakate mit den Polizeifotos ertappter Freier potentielle Kunden von Prostituierten abschrecken. "Das könnten auch Sie sein", steht unter den Fotos.

Zum Super Bowl 2010 in Miami waren nach Polizeischätzungen bis zu 10.000 Prostituierte gekommen. Es liegen keine offiziellen Zahlen vor, wie viele davon minderjährige Zwangsprostituierte waren. Nach Polizeiangaben wurden in Miami in der Super-Bowl-Woche 14 Personen wegen Prostitution verhaftet. Das sei keine außergewöhnlich hohe Zahl, berichtete der TV-Sender WFAA aus Dallas.

Deena Graves von der Initiative Traffick 911, die gegen Zwangsprostitution kämpft, berichtet von 12- bis 14-Jährigen, die für das Geschäft mit dem Sex bei dem Sport-Event ausgenutzt würden. "Unsere Gruppen sind überall in Texas aktiv, um auf das Problem aufmerksam zu machen", sagt Graves. Teams von Freiwilligen seien auf den Straßen unterwegs und sprächen mit Passanten. Im Internet gibt es eine Kampagne, auch die örtlichen Medien sind beteiligt. "Menschenhändler folgen dem Geld, und der Super Bowl bringt viel Geld", sagte Graves WFAA.
Viele Opfer werden aus armen Ländern zum Einsatz in die USA verschleppt. Andere werden in sozial schwachen Stadtvierteln vor Ort rekrutiert. Am Samstag vergangener Woche besuchten ehrenamtliche Helfer Brennpunkte von Dallas, um Anwohner auf die Gefahr aufmerksam zu machen. "Anfangs war ich etwas nervös, weil ich bei fremden Leuten an der Tür klopfen musste, aber es ist einfach nötig", sagt die Freiwillige Amber Simpson, die mehr als hundert Wohnungen besuchte. Mit ihren Helfern verteilte sie Info-Broschüren und warnte vor Zuhältern, die Mädchen in die Prostitution führen.

Auch Fluggesellschaften sind an der Präventionsarbeit beteiligt. Am Montag gab es auf dem Flughafen von Dallas ein Training für Flugbegleiter, damit sie mögliche Fälle von Zwangsprostitution besser erkennen können. Dem Bordpersonal werde gezeigt, wie es verdächtige Situationen erkennen könne und wen es bei Verdachtsfällen einschalten solle, sagt Nancy Rivard von der Gruppe Airline Ambassadors. In den Tagen vor dem Super Bowl seien vier Opfer von Zwangsprostitution aus den Flugzeugen von drei Airlines gerettet worden, unter ihnen ein Mädchen aus Kambodscha. "Das war ein guter Start", so Rivard.

Kondompflicht für Pornodarsteller

Die Stadt Los Angeles plant die Einführung einer Kondompflicht beim Porno-Dreh, um die Ausbreitung von Geschlechtskrankheiten einzudämmen.

knapp zehn Jahre lang konnten sich Porno-Darsteller in einer gemeinnützigen Klinik in Los Angeles auf Geschlechtskrankheiten untersuchen lassen. Die Klinik schloss Ende des vergangenen Jahres ihre Pforten. Einem Bericht der New York Times zufolge, will nun die Stadt Los Angeles die entstandene "Gesundheitslücke" füllen.

Wie die US-Zeitung berichtet, sprachen sich die städtischen Gesetzgeber für eine Verordnung aus, nach der an allen Pornofilm-Sets der Stadt die männlichen Darsteller verpflichtet wären, Kondome zu tragen.

"Wir können unsere Köpfe nicht länger in den Sand stecken", sagte Stadtrat Bill Rosendahl der Zeitung. "Diese Menschen sollten Kondome benutzen. Immer."

Selbstverwaltung

Das Gesetz wäre dabei das erste seiner. Die Pornoindustrie in den USA konnte sich bislang, vor allem was die Gesundheit der Darsteller betrifft, weitgehend selbst verwalten und argumentierte in der Vergangenheit mit der gut funktionierenden "freiwilligen Selbstverpflichtung".

"Das System hat seit Jahren funktioniert", entgegnet etwa Vivid-Entertainment-Chef Steven Hirsch. "Wenn wir gesehen haben, dass die Leute krank wurden, haben wir die Benutzung von Kondomen verbindlich angeordnet." Die Branche befürchtet nun erhebliche Umsatzeinbußen.

Die Pornofilm-Produzenten hatten bislang die Vereinbarung, nur Darsteller zu engagieren, welche sich in den vergangenen 30 Tagen einem Gesundheitscheck unterzogen hatten.

Von Seiten der Pornoindustrie wird betont, dass es seit dem Jahr 2004 lediglich drei HIV-Infektionen - wobei bei keiner definitiv nachgewiesen werden konnte, dass sie von einem Pornodreh herrührt - unter Pornodarstellern gegeben hatte.

Dem entgegnet das Gesundheitsamt von Los Angeles County, dass jedes Jahr rund ein Viertel aller registrierten Pornodarsteller der Stadt mit einer oder mehreren Geschlechtskrankheiten behandelt würden.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – U.S. Sen. Harry Reid took aim at the world's oldest profession Tuesday, telling state lawmakers the time has come to have an adult conversation about Nevada's legal sex trade if the state hopes to succeed in the 21st century.

The Democratic Senate majority leader made the comments before a joint session of the Legislature as brothel owners and lobbyists — and working girls from the rural establishments — looked on from the gallery.

In his autobiography, Reid, a Mormon, wrote about growing up in the mining hamlet of Searchlight, Nev., and learning to swim in the pool at a bordello. His mother took in laundry from the 13 brothels around town.

But when the nation thinks about Nevada, Reid said, "it should think about the world's newest ideas and newest careers — not about its oldest profession."

He received a smattering of applause when he first suggested Nevada outlaw bordellos. By the time he finished with the topic, his remarks were met with silence from the representatives of a state whose identity is woven tightly with gambling, alcohol, quick marriages and prostitution.

Reid, who won re-election to a fifth term in November, focused his speech on job creation efforts in a state facing record joblessness, bankruptcies and foreclosures in the wake of the Great Recession.

"We've recovered in the past and we'll recover in the future," he said. "We've met crisis before and we've prevailed. Winning is what we do. Winning is what we have to do."

Reid drew applause when he said he would work to reform education and pledged to do "everything I can to help ease the burden on state and local school districts." He also spoke against the state's term limit, which he called "destructive," and urged lawmakers to have voters consider a repeal.

Reid also touted renewable energy, saying "the future of our economy depends on it and so does the future of our environment and our national security." He also gave a nod to tourism, saying it "will always be Nevada's biggest industry, but it can't be our only one."

But when it comes to attracting businesses, Reid said, "parents don't want their children to look out of a school bus and see a brothel. Or live in a state with the wrong kind of red lights."

"So let's have an adult conversation about an adult subject," he said.

Brooke Taylor, a prostitute at Bunny Ranch east of Carson City, called Reid's speech "offensive" and said Reid should be proud of the way the state's brothels regulate the sex industry.

"We're the first ones to do it right," Taylor said.

The infamous Mustang Ranch east of Reno was licensed as Nevada's first legal brothel in the early 1970s. Brothels now operate in outlying areas around the state, paying local jurisdictions assorted fees that can be a significant portion of their budgets. They are outlawed in 5 counties [of 15 counties], however, including those encompassing Las Vegas and Reno.

Speaking with reporters afterward, Reid was asked why he was bringing up brothels now. He grew impatient with reporters' incessant questions about prostitution — a small fraction of his speech — and at one point suggested, "It seems to me you guys should get a new life."

Former state archivist Guy Rocha said this was the first time he has heard a U.S. senator ask the Legislature to act on the issue.

"I don't see how brothels are undermining the economy," Rocha said.

Two years ago, brothel owners supported a bill to impose a $5 tax on sex acts, but the measure died in committee.

Ein Gesetzentwurf für Georgia stebt an für Frauen, die eine Fehlgeburt hatten, die Todesstrafe einzuführen, sofern sie nicht beweisen können, dass die Fehlgeburt ohne jedes menschliche Zutun zustandegekommen ist.

Auch wenn dieser Gesetzentwurf das Parlament wahrscheinlich nicht passieren wird, alleine seine Existenz beweist, welchen Einfluß patriarchalisch-religiöse Politiker inzwischen in den USA gewonnen haben.

Ga. Law Could Give Death Penalty for Miscarriages

It's only February, but this year has been a tough one for women's health and reproductive rights. There's a new bill on the block that may have reached the apex (I hope) of woman-hating craziness. Georgia State Rep. Bobby Franklin has introduced a 10-page bill that would criminalize some miscarriages, and make abortion in Georgia completely illegal and punishable by death. Basically, it's everything an "pro-life" activist could want aside from making all women who've had abortions wear big red "A"s on their chests.

I doubt that a bill that makes a legal procedure liable for the death penalty will pass. The bill, however, shows an astonishing lack of concern for women's health and well-being. Under Rep. Franklin's bill, HB 1, women who miscarry could convicted of a felony (and therefore be subject to the death penalty or life in prison) if they cannot prove that there was "no human involvement whatsoever in the causation" of their miscarriage. There is no clarification of what "human involvement" means, and this is hugely problematic as medical doctors do not know exactly what causes miscarriages. Miscarriages are estimated to terminate up to a quarter of all pregnancies and the Mayo Clinic says that "the actual number is probably much higher because many miscarriages occur so early in pregnancy that a woman doesn't even know she's pregnant. Most miscarriages occur because the fetus isn't developing normally."

Holding women criminally liable for a totally natural, common biological process is a big freakin' problem. Even more ridiculously, the bill holds women responsible for protecting their fetuses from "the moment of conception," despite the fact that pregnancy tests aren't accurate until at least 3 weeks after conception. Unless Franklin (who is not a health professional) invents a revolutionary intrauterine conception alarm system, it's unclear how exactly the state of Georgia would enforce that rule other than holding all possibly-pregnant women under lock and key.

I've seen a lot of anti-woman, hate-filled bills this year, but this one takes the cake. Congrats, Rep. Franklin, you've officially put the "rights" of Georgia's "prenatal citizens" (his words) over the lives of actual, born, human beings. Luckily for the US, only "natal citizens" (my words) can vote.

Die Unruhen im arabischen Raum könnten diese anheizen.

Als „Hotspots“ nannte er Frankreich, Griechenland, Spanien, Irland und Großbritannien. In Europa wachse eine Generation heran, die keine Wirtschaftsblüte erlebt. „Sie haben eine Universitätsausbildung, die nichts wert ist, bekommen keine oder schlecht bezahlte Jobs.

The federal 4th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a Maryland strip club law prohibiting employees from being unclothed, showing private parts or simulating sex acts while working at a place serving alcohol is unconstitutional.

The plaintiffs, the Legend Night Club and the Classics Night Club, operate adult entertainment establishments in Prince George's County.

In the opinion issued Thursday upholding a lower court's injunction against enforcing the law, the court said the statute "prohibits a broad swath of expression protected by the First Amendment."

The court, quoting another case, said the law could even affect non-erotic performances like "a political satire, a Shakespeare play depicting young love or a drama depicting the horrors of rape."

Cal Supreme Court to define 'pimp'

Jomo Zambia was driving his truck down Sepulveda Boulevard on a typically pleasant June night in the San Fernando Valley when he thought he spied a prostitute.

At the notorious intersection of Sepulveda and Valerio known for its prostitutes, Zambia made a U-turn, stopped his truck and beckoned the woman through the open passenger window to get inside.

"What for," the woman asked. Zambia said he was a pimp and he offered his services, which included providing housing and clothing, if she turned over all of her money to him. When she expressed skepticism about his credentials, he waved a business card in her face and insisted he was "legit" and promised he would "take care of her."

The prostitute turned out to be Los Angeles Police Officer Erika Cruz working undercover. Zambia was arrested that night in 2007, convicted and sentenced to four years in prison. He has since been paroled.

But his case lives on.

On March 8, the California Supreme Court — which hears every death sentence appeal and handles historic cases on topics such as the gay marriage debate — will begin to answer this legal question:

"Can a defendant be convicted of pandering for offering to act as a pimp for a woman who appears to be already working as a prostitute?"

In other words, the high court has decided to define what makes a pimp in California.

The attorneys involved in the case and court watchers insist the case is a legally important one that will reach beyond who goes to prison for pandering.

Zambia's case is among the first heard by the newly comprised Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, who was sworn in last month.

Zambia's case will offer insight into what side of the classic philosophical divide judge Cantil-Sakauye and the new court will take when it comes to interpreting the law.





Is the new court one that sticks to the "plain meaning" of the printed words on the books, or will it try to divine the intent of each law's creator?

Zambia's lawyer Vanessa Place is demanding a strict, plain-meaning approach. That's because Zambia's case boils down to defining the phrase in California law that makes it a crime for anyone who "induces, persuades or encourages another person to become a prostitute."

Place argues that prison is reserved only for those who recruit innocent victims into the "game" and that would-be pimps can't be convicted of pandering when they attempt to persuade a working prostitute to "change management." Her argument turns on defining the word "become."

The California Attorney General's office insists the court look at the intent of the pandering law, arguing the California Legislature meant to lock up anyone who tried to encourage someone to work for them as a prostitute. Deputy Attorney General Rama Maline says there's no way lawmakers intended to let suspects like Zambia off the hook.

""This narrow view of pandering flies in the face of the common-sense construction of the statute," Maline said in his written arguments to the court. To rule otherwise "would severely undermine efforts to combat prostitution."

Until recently, the defense attorneys say, pandering charges were used mostly to send brothel operators and heads of extensive prostitution rings to prison.

For example, a jury in 1995 convicted so-called Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss of pandering for operating a high-end prostitution ring. Her conviction and three-year sentence were tossed out the next year when an appellate court found juror misconduct.

But now, defense attorneys throughout the state are complaining that prosecutors are overzealously charging suspects with pandering, which carries a minimum three-year prison sentence, instead of less serious crimes such as solicitation, which often results in probation. They argue that the law is misapplied to suspects like Zambia, who before his arrest lived with his parents and worked at nights in their janitorial company cleaning office buildings.

"You don't have to use a bazooka [Panzerfaust] to go after a fly," Place said. "There are plenty of laws on the books to police prostitution."

Some courts are starting to agree. In January, the state Court of Appeal tossed out the pandering conviction of an Elk Grove man who offered a 17-year-old girl money in exchange for sex, reasoning the suspect was only soliciting sex and not trying to be a pimp.

Until 2009, every appellate court that considered the issue sided with the prosecutors' interpretation of the law: a pimp is pandering when he entices anyone to work as a prostitute. But then in 2009, a three-judge appellate panel based in Santa Ana "reluctantly" tossed out the conviction of a man convicted of trying to persuade a practicing prostitute to work for him.

"If the Legislature had wanted a more broadly applicable provision, it could have easily replaced the phrase 'become a prostitute' with the phrase 'engage in prostitution,'" Justice William Bedsworth wrote for the unanimous panel. "We cannot simply assume it meant the latter when it said the former."

A bill introduced in the Assembly last year to change the law to include working prostitutes died quietly in committee. Zambia's conviction and the last word on interpreting "become" in the pandering stature rests with the California Supreme Court.

Place said she has lost touch with Zambia since his parole from prison and he couldn't be found for comment.

Für mich ist das ein wirklich illustratives Beispiel für die Folgen, wenn man gesetzlich in die intimsten und privatesten zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen eingreift.

Klare Abgrenzungen, zum Beispiel für "Gewalt", sind dann nicht mehr möglich, man verliert sich in Feinheiten und künstliche Definitionen, mit dem Ende in Willkür und Unfreiheit.

Im vorgestellten Fall des Police Officer Cruz kommt noch die Frage hinzu, ob die Polizei "Straftaten" (vermeintlich oder nicht") provozieren oder, wie hier, sogar unterstützend herbeiführen darf.

The city is so broke that in 2008 it became the first California city to declare bankruptcy over entrenched budgetary problems.

City officials have had to trim the police force from 155 to 90, leaving the remaining officers with little time to haul in hookers and johns - and word of this traveled fast in the street trade.

As a result, streetwalkers and pimps have come from as far away as Oregon and Mexico to work Vallejo.

Numerous neighborhood watch groups have sprung up to fight crime in Vallejo.

March 3rd 2011 is International Sex Workers’ Rights Day. Around the globe sex workers and allies are celebrating the strength and resilience of their communities. Locally, the Sex Workers’ Outreach Project of the San Francisco Bay Area (SWOPSF) is calling on Vallejo to proceed with compassion and
justice while addressing recent concerns of residents who object to a visible increase of prostitution activities in their neighborhoods.

“Prostitution crackdowns just push sex workers from one city to the next, the problem is not being solved, people are simply being displaced.”
Says Robyn Few, co-founder of SWOPUSA. “Community groups would do better to look at economic empowerment approaches rather than shame and hatred.”

We must look at the conditions that put people into street economies in the first place. Economic disadvantage, inadequate employment and educational opportunities lock people into the sex trade, whether by choice or circumstance or a combination of the two. “If you want prostitutes off of your streets, then support viable economic alternatives, not arrest or
incarceration which impose further economic and life hardships” Shannon Williams of SWOPSF said, “Spraying people with hoses is not only inhumane and dehumanizing, it’s ineffective and sends a message that violence toward
sex workers is acceptable.”

Women are hit the hardest by economic recession, resulting in more of them entering the sex industry. Many turn to private venues, but online sites such as Craigslist Adult Services have been shut down, forcing people to seek business in open-air black markets. Federal anti-trafficking efforts that have been misdirected into prostitution abatement efforts have worked
to censor sex workers, removing safer and more private ways of doing business.

Few says, “It’s time to come up with new solutions. Arrest, incarceration and shame have not succeeded in curbing prostitution in any city anywhere else. Don’t expect these tactics to solve any of Vallejo’s problems either.”

Teacher fired for porn star past


You can't escape your past - especially if your past involves starring in X-rated films.

Tera Myers lost her job teaching science at a Missouri high school on Monday after a student discovered that she had starred in pornographic films under the name Rikki Anderson two decades ago.

In 2006 she lost a similar teaching job under the name Tericka Dye in Kentucky after school officials discovered her sultry past. After that incident, Myers said making the films was the worst decision of her life, Heartland News reports.

"I'm a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who's made a lot of bad decisions in life," she said. "Anybody who's been in my classroom could tell you how much I love teaching and how much I love these students, and that should be what matters more than anything in my past."

I'll admit, I'm torn here. If I had kids, there's no way I'd want a former porn star teaching them. But aren't redemption and opportunity (supposedly) foundational to our society? Myers took the jobs because she needed the money, and subsequently went to college and met her teaching qualifications.

And most of us can understand being young and taking any job for want of money. I, for one, have done it all: from cleaning toilets to modeling; from working retail to working as a nanny.

But most of us would draw the line way before pornography. Perhaps Myers loves teaching, but accountability is a part of one's professional life. In a different field, her past might be excusable, but it's hard to imagine a school - or parents - that would accept Myers as a teacher.

She might prefer teaching, but Myers will surely be able to find another job. And let's face it - she can probably find a way to profit off this incident anyway. Lifetime movie, anyone?

We were part of an unprecedented advocacy collaboration between sex worker and sex workers rights groups, human rights advocates, academic researchers and family members of sex workers who came together in an unprecedented advocacy collaboration, now known as "Human Rights For All: Concerned Advocates for the Rights of Sex Workers and People in the Sex Trade" (HRA).



HRA urged the U.S. State Department and other policy makers to accept Recommendation 86, part of the report of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), which called on the US to look into the special vulnerability of sex workers to violence and human rights abuses.



Yesterday the U.S. fully accepted UPR recommendation #86, and in doing so made history. In the report released to the United Nations, the U.S. states "We agree that no one should face violence or discrimination in access to public services based on sexual orientation or their status as a person in prostitution, as recommendation [#86] suggests".



"As the first organization to ever get the issue of sexual freedom as a fundamental human right "on the table" at the United Nations meeting in Geneva earlier this year, we are especially happy to note that the Obama administration is taking human rights abuses against sex workers seriously, and is willing to stand up for what is right.",
said Woodhull's Human Rights Program Director, RJ Thompson.



RJ helped set the stage for this effort, working with this coalition as part of our efforts in Geneva at the United Nations Universal Periodic Review. RJ continues,

"It is significant to note that this is the first time the United States has accepted that sex workers' rights are a different issue from human trafficking victims and that sex workers' rights are human rights."



Sex Worker Rights ARE Human Rights, and Woodhull is proud to be part of this historic effort and will continue to work with this coalition to take ensure that steps are taken to actually improve the daily lives of sex workers.

At UN, US Says No one Should Face Discrimination For Public Services, Including Sex Workers

March 9th, 2011- According to their statement in response to the UN’s human rights evaluation, the US agrees that “…no one should face violence or discrimination in access to public services based on sexual orientation or their status as a person in prostitution.” This marks a rare occasion in which the US is addressing the needs of sex workers as a distinct issue separate from human trafficking. Sex workers have unique needs that aren’t adequately addressed by federal trafficking policy. Sex workers are hopeful that this will present a new opportunity to work with anti-trafficking efforts to address mutual human rights concerns.

"People in the sex trade have been marginalized and stigmatized when seeking public services, including through law enforcement. This is a big step forward to acknowledging sex workers’ human rights."Kelli Dorsey, Executive Director of Different Avenues said.

Over the past year sex workers and their families, sex workers’ rights groups, human rights advocates, and academic researchers have engaged in an unprecedented advocacy collaboration. “It has been crucial to bring together the perspectives of a wide range of communities including immigrant and LGBT groups in order to illustrate the depth of human rights violations experienced by sex workers in the United States,” says Penelope Saunders, Coordinator of the Best Practices Policy Project, who worked with the Desiree Alliance to send a shadow report to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). These initial efforts resulted in Recommendation 86 and the formation of a group called Human Rights For All: Concerned Advocates for the Rights of Sex Workers and People in the Sex Trade (HRA).

HRA had support from more than 125 organizations in urging law makers to accept Recommendation #86, part of the report of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), which called on the US to look into the special vulnerability of sex workers to violence and human rights abuses. “We were long overdue for the United States to take the needs of sex workers seriously, particularly the need to stem violence and discrimination,” says attorney Sienna Baskin, Co-Director of Sex Workers Project at the Urban Justice Center in New York.

"Human beings cannot be excluded from accesible services because they work in economies outside of society's accepted norms,” explains Cristine Sardina, co-director, Desiree Alliance. “The fact that the U.S. has acknowledged the recommendation in full speaks to the current administration's willingness to recognize the abuses sex workers have been subjected to for too long. We look forward to working with this administration".

Sex workers say the issues they face are complex and more work will have to be done to protect against human rights abuses. “Sex workers who are transgender or people of color face the most violence and it's important that we continue to realize and work towards ending that, this is a good first step.” Said Tara Sawyer, who sits on the Board of Directors of the Sex Workers Outreach Project USA.

On Friday March 18th Sex Workers will stage demonstrations in cities across the country to celebrate adoption of Recommendation #86. “The U.S. has finally acknowledged that sex workers face issues separate from those of human trafficking victms,” said Natalie Brewster Nguyen, an artist and member of the Sex Workers Outreach Project of Tucson who is organizing the demonstrations on the 18th, ”Now we need to demand that steps be taken to address the issues that will actually improve the daily lives of sex workers.”

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) was established by the UN General Assembly in 2006 as a process through which the human rights records of the United Nations’ 192 Member States could be reviewed and assessed.

This review, conducted through the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), is based upon human rights obligations and commitments expressed in the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, human rights instruments to which the State is party, etc.

The United States is a strong supporter of the UPR process, which provides a unique avenue for the global community to discuss human rights around the world.

Individual countries are slated for review every four years, with the United States scheduled for its review in 2010-2011.

UPR sessions take place at the HRC in Geneva, and are framed by reports submitted by national governments.The United States submitted its report to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on August 20, 2010.
