Selbstverständlich ist sexworker.at hier mit dabei - Wenn es technisch umsetzbar ist, bin ich gerne bereit jeden Vorschlag einzuarbeiten. Ich versuche auch eine richtige E-Cardfunktion mit Sexworker-Motiven hier im Forum einzubauen. Weiß zwar noch nicht wie ich es umsetzen werde, aber wird schon irgendwie gehen.

Fifth Annual International Day to End Violence
Against Sex Workers
December 17th, 2007

December 17th is International Day to End Violence Against Sex
Workers. This event was created to call attention to hate crimes
committed against sex workers all over the globe.

Originally thought of by Dr. Annie Sprinkle and started by the Sex
Workers Outreach Project USA as a memorial and vigil for the victims
of the Green River Killer in Seattle Washington 1982. International Day to
End Violence Against Sex Workers has empowered workers from over 30
cities around the world to come together and organize against
discrimination and remember victims of violence.

During the week of December 17, 2007, sex worker rights organizations
will be staging actions and vigils to raise awareness about violence
that is commonly committed against sex workers. The assault, battery,
rape and murder of sex workers must end. Existing laws prevent sex
workers from reporting violence. The stigma and discrimination that
is perpetuated by the prohibitionist laws has made violence against us
acceptable. Please join in drawing attention to this around the world
with the 5th annual International Day to End Violence Against Sex
Workers.

Einer der aufwendigsten Strafprozesse in der kanadischen Justizgeschichte ist am Sonntag mit einem Schuldspruch gegen den Schweinemäster Robert William Pickton aus der Provinz British Columbia zu Ende gegangen. Der 58 Jahre alte Angeklagte wurde der Tötung von sechs Frauen für schuldig befunden, die zwischen 1997 und 2001 aus dem Vancouver Stadtviertel Lower Eastside verschwanden, das von Armut, Rauschgift und Prostitution gezeichnet ist.

Die Geschworenen folgten allerdings nicht dem Antrag der Staatsanwaltschaft, Pickton wegen des schwersten Tötungsdelikts zu verurteilen, das dem Mord im deutschen Strafrecht vergleichbar ist. Stattdessen erkannten sie auf das zweitschwerste Tötungsdelikt (second-degree murder). Auch dafür ist im kanadischen Strafgesetz eine lebenslange Freiheitsstrafe vorgesehen. Allerdings ist schon nach zehn Jahren und nicht erst nach 25 Jahren eine Entlassung auf Bewährung möglich.



Mehr als zwei Dutzende Frauen getötet

Die Staatsanwaltschaft beschuldigt den Schweinemäster, insgesamt mehr als zwei Dutzend Frauen, die auf der Lower Eastside als Prostituierte arbeiteten, auf seinen eine Autostunde entfernt liegenden Hof in der Ortschaft Port Coquitlam gelockt und dort getötet zu haben. Die Leichen hat er nach Darstellung der Anklagebehörde zerstückelt und zum Teil an Schweine verfüttert. Die Verteidigung hatte dagegen vorgetragen, dass Pickton zwar von den Leichnamen auf dem mittlerweile abgerissenen Hof gewusst habe, den er gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder bewirtschaftete, dass er jedoch nicht der Mörder gewesen sei.

Die Ermittler hatten bei Durchsuchungen und Grabungen auf dem Hofgelände mehr als 600.000 Beweisstücke zusammengetragen. Ferner berief sich die Staatsanwaltschaft auf ein heimlich aufgenommenes Polizeiverhör im Gefängnis, bei dem Pickton geäußert hatte, dass ihm noch eine Tat gefehlt habe, „um die fünfzig vollzumachen“. In dem Prozess hatte der Angeklagte, der auch von mehreren Zeugen schwer belastet wurde, dann aber auf nicht schuldig plädiert. Ob und wann der zweite Prozess gegen Pickton wegen der Tötungen zwanzig weiterer Opfer beginnt, steht noch nicht fest.

The Joint Missing Women Task Force in B.C. said the conviction of Robert William Pickton on Sunday — on six counts of second-degree murder — wrapped up an important milestone in its ongoing investigation.

But the task force continues to move forward on the unsolved cases currently under investigation, said spokeswoman Const. Alex Clarke.

"As of today [Sunday] there're 39 unsolved missing women cases that remain open and are being actively investigated," Clarke told the media following the guilty verdict handed down by a B.C. Supreme Court jury in New Westminster.

"Once again, we encourage anybody who knows anything or may have any information about these women to please call the Joint Missing Women Task Force tip line," she said.

The sex trade workers in the Downtown Eastside are in an "extremely desperate situation," said Sue Davis, a co-ordinator with the Prostitutes Alternatives Counselling and Education Society, a group of sex workers fighting to decriminalize and regulate the sex trade.

Davis told CBC News that many of the sex trade workers cried when she told them of Pickton's convictions.

"We're still struggling so much for our safety and stability in the Downtown Eastside," she said.

Trisha Baptie, a former prostitute who had been closely following the Pickton trial, said she heard about the Pickton farm in the early 1990s and knew some of the victims.

She began writing for a website, www.orato.com , set up to remember the victims to give people a different perspective of their lives.

"People knew they were drug-addicted sex trade workers from the Downtown Eastside, but how many people have an ex-hooker as their best friend? So I was hoping to give them a perspective of someone who had been through it and had come out the other side," Baptie told CBC News.

"They're women. They're sisters. They're daughters … They were in dire circumstances that were so unfortunate and they met their end in such a violent way."
Women and poverty

Dalannah Gail Bowen, a First Nations elder living in the Downtown Eastside, said the issues of women and poverty have to be addressed properly.

"There's still women going missing," she said. "We can't forget the women that are harmed or beaten whether [or not] they are prostitutes."

"We need to find tools for change in ways we regard women who're homeless and who have to work in prostitution to pay their bills."

Davis said more should have been done when the women were first reported missing in the late 1990s, but she said police have become more responsive to sex trade workers' complaints since Pickton's arrest in 2002.

"I see a total change in the way police are handling the situation. They take reports when sex trade workers are assaulted now," Davis said.

"[But] you have to commit yourselves to work through these things … to see changes in society."

Die grausame Todesspur des Würgers

Nach neuen Ermittlungserfolgen und 60 000 Datensätzen schließt die Polizei die Akten im Fall Volker Eckert

Am Steuer der Silo-Lastzüge einer Oelsnitzer Spedition zog Volker Eckert die Todesspur durch Europa

Hof / Bayreuth – Am Ende einer 32 Jahre langen Mordserie dreht sich Volker Eckert aus Stoffteilen selbst einen Strick. Er hängt sich an der Wandhalterung seines Fernsehers in der Bayreuther Haftzelle auf. Setzt er damit ein letztes Zeichen seiner tödlichen Würgeleidenschaft? Denn Eckert hatte mit Händen und Seilen auch seine Opfer erwürgt. Ausnahmslos. Der Tag des Selbstmords ist der 2. Juli. Die Staatsanwaltschaft in Hof – federführend und beispielhaft erfolgreich in der internationalen Zusammenarbeit der Ermittler – hatte die Anklageschrift für sechs Mordfälle bereits aufgesetzt. Doch nach dem Selbstmord muss sie gemäß Rechtsvorschrift das Verfahren einstellen.



Genaues Bewegungsbild

Bei der Polizei freilich geht die Arbeit der Soko „Fernverkehr“ auf Hochtouren weiter. Zahlreiche Anfragen aus dem Ausland sorgen für Betrieb bei den Fahndern des Polizeipräsidiums in Bayreuth. Für die ist der Fall ungewöhnlich genug. Die Arbeitsbelastung ist hoch. Die Erfolgsquote auch. Die fünf Prostituiertenmorde von 1999 bis 2006 – die der 48-jährige Eckert ebenso gestand wie den Mord 1974 an seiner 14-jährigen Mitschülerin Sylvia U. in Plauen – rekonstruiert die Polizei anhand eines Bewegungsbildes. Dessen Erstellung erfordert unter anderem die Auswertung von 60 000 Datensätzen vom Tankbeleg bis zur Mautquittung des Fernfahrers.

Dieses Bewegungsbild macht die Ermittler jetzt so sicher, dass Volker Eckert für sieben weitere Morde verantwortlich ist. Anhand von Geldautomaten-Belegen und Handydaten, den umfangreichen Notizen auch über seine Verbrechen und die Fahrtenbücher von Volker Eckert sowie unzähligen DNA-Abgleichen entsteht eine Todesspur quer durch Europa. Mit elf grausamen Würgemorden an Prostituierten. Eckerts identische Vorgehensweise gleicht dabei einem schrecklichen Ritual.



Beim Morden fotografiert

Denn bis auf die beiden Morde in Plauen 1974 und 1987 suchte sich Eckert seine Opfer immer im Hurenmilieu [was für ein stigmatisierender Begriff "im Hurenmilieu" besser "unter rechtlich stark diskriminierten Sexarbeiterinnen"]. Meist auf dem Straßenstrich, für den es für interessierte Trucker regelrechte Landkarten gibt. Eckert hebt vor dem Kontakt stets Geld am Automaten ab. Er spricht die Prostituierten an und nimmt sie im Führerhaus seines Lastwagens mit. Vor dem Geschlechtsverkehr würgt er die Frauen zu Tode. Fotografiert sich in manchen Fällen dabei selbst. Danach befriedigt er seinen Sexualtrieb und legte den Frauen ein Seil um den Hals. Er fotografiert nochmals die Opfer, schneidet ihnen oft Haarbüschel ab und nimmt weitere „Trophäen“ mit. Dann legt er die Opfer nackt im Gelände ab. Die grausamen Trophäen sammelt Volker Eckert auch in seiner Hofer Wohnung. Fotos der Taten und Toten nimmt er sogar in der Lkw-Kabine mit. Über die meisten Morde führt er ganz persönliche Aufzeichnungen.


Er richtete sich selbst: Volker Eckert musste wie auf unserem Bild beim Verlassen des Bayreuther Gerichtsgebäudes mehrmals der Justiz unter die Augen treten. Doch vor seinem Prozess in Hof entzog er sich seinen Richtern durch Selbstmord in der Gefängniszelle.



Nächste Tat nach 13 Jahren

Der ersten Tat nach dem grausamen Strickmuster fällt am 25. Juni 2001 die 25-jährige Kenianerin Sandra Osifo bei Bordeaux zum Opfer. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hat Volker Eckert 13 Jahre lang nicht mehr gemordet. 1987 tötet er eine 18-jährige Bekannte in Plauen, zuvor als 15-Jähriger eine 14-jährige Plauener Mitschülerin. Während der zweiten Tat sorgt 1987 der „Würger von Plauen“ für Angst und Schlagzeilen in der Vogtland-Stadt. Auch Volker Eckert gerät ins Visier der Polizei. Doch statt für seine Morde wird er wegen zweier beinahe tödlich verlaufener und sexuell motivierter Würgeattacken auf junge Frauen wegen versuchten Mordes zu zwölf Jahren Haft verurteilt. Volker Eckert wird nach der Wende ein Teil seiner Strafe erlassen. Im Juli 1994 kommt er auf freien Fuß. Er nimmt sich eine Wohnung in Hof und arbeitet als Fernfahrer bei einer internationalen Spedition im nahen Oelsnitz.

9. Oktober 2001: Nicht einmal drei Monate nach seinem ersten Prostituiertenmord erwürgt Volker Eckert die 24-jährige Hure Beatriz Dias Mundoz im nordspanischen Macanet de la Selva. Dreieinhalb Jahre später bringt der 48-jährige Hofer die Russin Mayra Veselova um, die ebenfalls auf dem Straßenstrich in Nordspanien tätig ist. Im Oktober 2006 wird in Frankreich nahe Reims die Leiche der 28-jährigen Prostituierten Agnieszka Bos aus Polen gefunden. Auch ein Opfer des Würgers aus Hof. Dessen letzte Tat wird ihm vier Wochen später zum Verhängnis: Kolleginnen beobachten am 2. November, wie die 20-jährige bulgarische Prostituierte Miglena Petrova im nordspanischen Sant Julia de Ramis zu Eckert in den Lkw steigt. Tags darauf ist sie tot. Just an jenem Tag entdeckt die katalanische Polizei eine heiße Spur. Eine Überwachungskamera hat an dem Platz, an dem Volker Eckert die Leiche abgelegt hat, den Laster von Volker Eckert aufs Bild genannt. Ein deutscher Silo-Truck. Die internationale Fahndung läuft an. Am 17. November 2006 wird Volker Eckert in Wesseling bei Köln festgenommen, als er gerade seinen Lkw wäscht.

Im Führerhaus finden die Beamten grausige Beweismittel: Polaroidfotos der Ermordeten, Haarsträhnen der Opfer und Kleidungsstücke. Und eine aufblasbare Gummipuppe, die Volker Eckert mit den Mord-Trophäen ausstaffiert, um sich zu erregen. Am 18. November gesteht Volker Eckert die fünf Prostituierten-Morde und die Tat an seiner Klassenkameradin in Plauen.



Grausige Beweismittel im Lkw

Am 21. November 2006 wird die Soko „Fernverkehr“ beim Polizeipräsidium Oberfranken in Bayreuth gegründet. In Spitzenzeiten kümmern sich bis zu 30 Beamte ausschließlich um den Hofer Serienmörder.

Angesichts der jetzigen internationalen Nachermittlungserfolge schließen die Bayreuther Fahnder die Akten, weitere Taten aber nicht aus. Auch, weil sie für die Zeit von 1995 bis 1999 kein genaues Bewegungsbild von Volker Eckert haben. Als der sich am 2. Juli 2007 den Strick um den Hals legt, endet das Leben eines Serienkillers, der traurige deutsche Kriminalgeschichte schreiben wird. Ob alle seine Taten geklärt sind, bleibt höchst fraglich.

• der überfallenen 37jährigen, die von zwei Tätern in ihrer Wohnung in der Burbacher Straße in Kessenich verletzt wurde,
• an die ermordete 40jährige zweifache Mutter Jolanta L. aus der Kastellstraße in Wiesbaden,
• den fünf Sexarbeiterinnen, die Volker Eckert ermordet und geschändet hat,
• an die vielen unbekannten und bisher namenlos gebliebenen Sexarbeiter und Sexarbeiterinnen, die Opfer von Gewalt oder Willkür wurden,

December 17 this year is the 5th International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. Due to the social discrimination and the unfair legal treatment, sex workers are often exposed to different kinds of violence. We hope to commemorate the sex workers who have been bullied and killed with today's activity, arouse more public concern on sex workers' safety, protect and respect sex workers' human rights.



Sex workers murdered

The police and the public indifference to the murder of sex workers indirectly push more sex workers to violence and threats. The pig farmer in Pickton, Canada, killed 31 women (with most of them were sex workers) but was only convicted of the Second Degree Murder. The case near Ipswich River, in which 5 sex workers were murdered, has not yet solved. Two brothers have robbed and killed 13 sex workers in 5 Chinese provinces. More than 60 were killed in Green River in the U.S., with the murderer claimed in court that it did not matter whatsoever even if a sex worker was killed. In Hong Kong, 3 sex workers were murdered by the Shun Shiu Po killer, while the killers who killed sex workers in Tsuen Wan, Tai Po and To Kwa Wan is still at large.



Violence sex workers encountered

Because of the unfair legal treatment, social discrimination and suppression by the law enforcement departments, sex workers are often exposed to violence such as robbery, rape, and murder. The police spend much resources and manpower to harass and raid on sex workers, say, carry out large scale survey on sex workers in different districts, force sex workers to provide information of flat owners and advertising website. Yet, when sex workers and ordinary citizens seek help from the police, the police often fail to solve their problems with enough resources. In addition, the police measures for "protecting sex workers" are only something eradicating sex workers. As a result, sex workers dare not to seek help from the police even in the case of emergency. Instead of protecting their safety, the police and authorities are indeed persecuting sex workers.

During January to November in 2007, we collected more than 826 complaints against police from sex workers, an increase of 127% compared with the year of 2006. These complaints included the receipt of sexual service by the police during operation, the inhuman treatment by the police during custody, the threats and intimidation by the police. In regards to the police abuse against sex workers, more than 620 citizens and sex workers voted for the most intolerable violation of sex workers' rights in December by giving their votes on our website, on our outdoor display board, and by signing the support letter (the total number of voters counted up to December 16 noon), with most of them were related to the police abuse.



CAPO Complaints say NO

The police always encourage people to file complaints to the CAPO (Complain Against Police Office). However, most people will not do so because of the fear of police revenge. In fact, sex workers were revenged after filing complaint to CAPO. The police officers being complained went to their workplaces to threaten the complainants. They even threaten to increase the punishment of the complainants. The "close communication and cooperation" between police officers has enabled the leakage of the confidential information of the complainants. The complainants are often stopped by the police in the course of filing complaints. The CAPO not only rejects the complaints about police abuse (like the refusal of investigating into the case of 80 women being imprisoned in iron cage), also fails to release the investigation report (like the death case of Li Yuen Yee2 has not yet completed in 2 years). The complainants' evidence is rephrased by the police, with they themselves are threatened and stopped to file the complaints. The police complaint system police, in which the investigation is done by the police, enables the police to further abuse their power without bearing any responsibility.

Today, we came here to the Police Headquarters with sex workers, supporters from the public, and some local social groups. We hope that there will be more public concern on the violence faced by sex workers and the issue of police abuse. We particularly hope that the police can stop using violence against sex workers immediately.



We have the following demands

1. Stop all kinds of violence against sex workers.
2. Stop police abuse and suppression on sex workers.
3. Decriminalize sex work, so that sex workers are protected by the law.
4. Eliminate the discrimination against sex workers in the society.
5. Recognize sex work as work, respect sex workers¡¦ basic rights.
6. Set up an independent complaint system for the investigation of police abuse.

International Day to End Violence Against Sex Worker
Background: This day originated from the day when Green River serial killer Gary Ridway, who has raped and killed more than 48 sex workers, was convicted. In order to stop violence against sex workers, sex worker organization SWOP has called upon sex workers throughout the world to organize activity to raise concern for those victimized sex workers, voice against violence and advocating to protect them through legislation.

In October 2005, police officer Yau Shu Ming refused payment after oral sex service by Li Yuen Yee in an undercover operation and framed her of blackmail and assault. Li was terribly frustrated and committed suicide by jumping off a building. Coroner¡'s Court has ended the trial in May 06. Her family members filed a complaint in CAPO and still have no report on the investigation after more than a year. CAPO said that they were busy and asked them to wait. Until now, those who concerned in the case are still at large and no disciplinary actions taken.

MONDAY DEC 17 is the International Day to End Violence against Sex
Workers. This is an event I'm very proud to say that I conceived of a
few years ago, and Robyn Few and Sex Worker Outreach Project
(SWOP) helped to get started. Beautiful memorial vigils and events
are now held in dozens of different countries and cities around the
world. I'll be attending the vigil in Los Angeles.

I hope you will participate in some way, not just to remember those
who have been victims of violence. But because it
is a beautiful, bonding, emotional, and profound
experience to stand with others in compassion and
solidarity. The Day To End Violence Against Sex
Workers vigils I have attended each year have
touched something very deep within me, and I would
recommend the experience to everyone. I'm grateful
to all those people who are hosting and attending
the vigils because I feel that they are very
important. These gatherings also garner much
public sympathy, media and understanding towards sex
worker issues in a way that nothing else does.

SEX WORKERS


December 17th is International Day to End Violence Against Sex
Workers. This event was created to call attention to hate crimes
committed against sex workers all over the globe.

Originally conceived of by Annie Sprinkle (prostitute/porn star
turned sexologist) and started by the Sex Workers Outreach Project
USA as a memorial and vigil for the victims of the Green River Killer
in Seattle Washington. International Day to End Violence Against Sex
Workers has empowered workers from over 30 cities around the world to
come together and organize against discrimination and remember
victims of violence.

During the week of December 17, 2007, sex worker rights organizations
will be staging actions and vigils to raise awareness about violence
that is commonly committed against sex workers. The assault, battery,
rape and murder of sex workers must end. Existing laws prevent sex
workers from reporting violence. The stigma and discrimination that
is perpetuated by the prohibitionist laws has made violence against
us acceptable. Please join in drawing attention to this around the
world with the 5th annual International Day to End violence Against
Sex Workers.

In October, a female judge in Philadelphia Judge Deni ruled that the
gang rape at gun point of a Craigslist escort was not rape but "theft
of services." All men were released, and ended up assaulting another
woman who was not a sex worker. Judge Deni was reelected to serve
another term as judge for Philadelphia shortly after this trial.
Closer to home, an Orange County cop who had been known to be
stalking exotic dancers working at a certain club was brought forth
with sexual assault charges that had a forensic semen sample as
evidence and still the now ex OC cop was not guilty of forcing Lucy
to perform a hand job because, as the prosecutor said to the jury
"she got what she wanted that night." If any of this strikes a chord
with you, because IT COULD BE YOU or someone you love, then come to
our gathering to honor the violated, abused and murdered sisters and
brothers in the industry..

Sex workers rally against law reforms

PROSTITUTES turned out in central Sydney today to mark the 5th International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers, and also to oppose New South Wales law reforms.

Spokeswoman Janelle Fawkes said the new sex workers laws, which came into force across NSW in July, would have the effect of pushing the ages-old industry further underground.

"On the basis of a single complaint, local councils in NSW are able to seek extreme closure orders, including withholding utilities such as power and water," Ms Fawkes, chief executive of the Scarlett Alliance, said today.

"The unintended consequences include increased uncertainty in the industry, which makes compliance with its laws even more unlikely."

Ms Fawkes said Victoria was considering adopting similar laws, which hand more power to councils to regulate the industry and close down unauthorised brothels.

The laws also widen the scope for people to lodge complaints.

Ms Fawkes said the reforms signalled a collusion between government and larger brothels, while sex workers felt their rights to a safe workplace and to occupational health and safety had been stripped away.

"The NSW closure laws are simply opening more pathways for corruption, and are a revived form of sanctioned violence against sex workers," she said.

This December 17th marks the 5th Annual International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. Local community members will commemorate the event with a vigil and march.





Organizations in the District of Columbia will also release preliminary findings from a community based research project, an initiative funded by the Sociological Initiatives Foundation, into the affects of prostitution policies on transpeople, the homeless, and other communities in DC.



A survey of 115 people across the District of Columbia who have been affected by anti-prostitution policies and other regulations of public space has revealed disturbing information.

63% of survey respondents reported negative experiences during interactions with police and when locked up.

Respondents reported: being insulted, humiliated or verbally abused by officers; being falsely arrested because officers “profiled the person as a prostitute;” confiscation or destruction of condoms and other safe sex supplies by officers during interactions; experiencing discrimination because of immigrant status and/or perceived or actual inability to speak English;

Being asked to provide sexual favors or services to police officers; and being strip searched by police officers in public.



“It saddens me to know that people who the police believe to be prostitutes are treated so unfairly,” commented Skytrinia Berkeley an advocate of Different Avenues, a co-sponsor of today’s event.

“The study also shows that most of these people have been in situations where they needed help from the police themselves. Yet 50% said they had a negative experience when contacting the police to report violence and other crimes committed against them. Surely we can do better in the District of Columbia to create an environment where everyone in need is protected by the police.”

Another service provision agency and co-sponsor of today’s event, HIPS, expressed dismay at the reports of confiscation and destruction of condoms and other materials. “Its estimated that 1 in 20 people in Washington is living with HIV/AIDS. Condoms save lives and should never be destroyed during police checks,” said Gigi Thomas of HIPS.



The International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers has empowered workers from over 100 cities around the world to come together and organize against discrimination and remember victims of violence. This event was created to call attention to hate crimes committed against sex workers all over the globe.

LEFÖ fordert am “Internationalen Tag gegen Gewalt an SexarbeiterInnen” mehr Rechte für Prostitutierte - Migrantinnen doppelt diskriminiert

Wien - Am heutigen “Internationalen Tag gegen Gewalt an SexarbeiterInnen” mahnt der Verein Lefö, dass nur Rechte Unrecht im Umgang mit SexarbeiterInnen verhindert. In einer Aussendung weisen sie darauf hin, dass SexarbeiterInnen einen äußerst schlechten Status in der österreichischen Gesellschaft haben: “Sie werden als Objekte gesehen und nicht als Subjekte von Rechten. Sie werden marginalisiert, kontrolliert und diskriminiert - durch Gesetze, gesellschaftspolitische MeinungsbildnerInnen und soziale Strömungen.” Um die Rahmenbedingungen für eine sichere Ausübung ihrer Arbeit zu verbessern, seien dringend gesetzliche Maßnahmen notwendig.

Diese müssen dafür geeignet sein, die “absichtliche Unsichtbarmachen” von SexarbeiterInnen zu beseitigen.



Hintergrund

In Österreich sind etwa 60-80 Prozent der SexarbeiterInnen Migrantinnen. Für die betroffenen Frauen wirkt zusätzlich zur Prostitutionsgesetzgebung noch das repressive Fremden- und Migrationsgesetz. Der Mord an der tschechischen Sexarbeiterin Katerina V. im August 2007 stelle ein dramatisches Beispiel dar, wie SexarbeiterInnen der Willkürlichkeit von Freiern und anderen, auch Nicht-Freiern, ausgesetzt sind.

Lefö fordert, dass alle SexarbeiterInnen Schutz durch den Staat erhalten: Schutz vor Gewalt, Diskriminierung, Sexismus und Rassismus. Die Umsetzung von Frauen- bzw. Menschenrechten müsse auch für SexarbeiterInnen gelten.

About 100 sex-trade workers and their supporters held red umbrellas high tonight as they marched along Ontario and Ste. Catherine Sts. to mark International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.

"Prejudice killed my sister," said Marian Dicicco, huddled under her umbrella - a symbol of solidarity.

"If she hadn't had that whole stigma and prejudice, she'd still be alive," said Dicicco, a mother of two, whose sister was a prostitute. Dicicco's sister committed suicide in 2002.

Dicicco, a former prostitute, said that some sex workers feel as though they have no choice to do what they do because it is a question of economic survival.

The march was one of 30 held around the world to draw attention to the violence faced by sex-trade workers and the criminalization of their job.

Jenn Clamen, an outreach worker at Stella, an advocacy and support group for the city's sex workers and the main organizer of the march, said prostitutes face a variety of types of violence in society, including physical violence.

"Are we okay with people continuing to die?" asked Clamen, pointing to the lack of attention paid to prostitutes when they are the victims of murder and other crimes.

This march also follows the discovery in October in Dezery Park near the Prefontaine metro station of a body of a woman who, Clamen said, was a sex-trade worker.

Marchers stopped in different locations with "symbolic meaning," for example, in front of a strip club that Clamen said "symbolizes the hypocrisy that people have with sexuality. Economically, people live off them and socially they don't respect them."

She said this kind of "hypocrisy" is what perpetuates violence towards sex workers.

Sex workers and their supporters are calling for the decriminalization of sex workers and Clamen said the laws that the state says protect prostitutes, actually put them in danger.

Farah Abdi, a prostitute, said it is also about speaking up and defending one's self. "It's very important to speak up because if we don't speak up, no one will for us," said Abdi.

Montreal, December 17, 2007 -

December 17 has been declared the International Day to End Violence Against Women in Prostitution. The members of the Concertation des luttes contre l’exploitation sexuelle (CLES) wish to acknowledge this event and reiterate their rejection of all forms of violence exerted, here and elsewhere in the world, against women and girls who find themselves in situations of prostitution. We denounce the psychological, sexual, physical, judicial and symbolic violence exerted against them - as against countless women in a patriarchal society - but we also denounce the judicial and social repression experienced by women in prostitution.

This violence occurs because our society would rather harass and criminalize these women than take on the people who are the source of these forms of violence, that is pimps and clients.

The current application of laws and regulations, at all three levels of government, focuses on criminalizing women rather than challenging clients and pimps. These last enjoy various forms of inaction and complicity, and therefore feel entirely entitled to treat persons in prostitution as a source of profits and gratification.

In the view of the various organizations and individuals belonging to the CLES, current attempts to have procuring and brothels decriminalized or legalized would only worsen this violence by legitimizing the commercial sexual exploitation of women.

Assault statistics indicate that pimps and clients are no less misogynist and violent behind closed doors than in street prostitution. The evidence presented during Robert Pickton’s trial establishes that his B.C. farm was essentially a brothel; Pickton has admitted having killed 49 women. In Quebec, at least 5 of the 14 women in prostitution murdered by men over the last ten years were employed by escort agencies, brothels, swingers clubs, bars, or visited buyers of “sexual services”. This organized violence must end.

The solution is not to normalize the prostitution industry - as some are demanding - but to target and challenge male “demand” for it. CLES is adamant that a world without prostitution is possible. Recent developments in countries such as Sweden establish that, rather than criminalizing women in situations of prostitution, it is much more effective to offer them substantive solutions by a) no longer arresting them,
b) truly answering their needs, and c) punishing their exploiters. Moreover, situating the institution of prostitution in the continuum of violence against women allows society to build solutions aimed at substantive equality for all women.

This substantive support is the one long demanded by impoverished, homeless, immigrant and drug-dependant women, who constitute the majority of the women locked in situations of human trafficking and survival prostitution. They require psychological support services, access to affordable housing and child care, detox facilities, return to school programs, the possibility of joining the workplace in satisfying jobs, income security, access to justice and simplified immigration procedures.

Created in March 2005, CLES is composed of front-line workers, academic researchers, authors and representatives of community and faith organizations. We all do popular education and advocacy work for people struggling with prostitution, a form of violence that is the polar opposite of equality between women and men, whether it happens on the street or via ‘escort’ agencies, ‘erotic’ massage parlors, ‘specialized’ bars or brothels, or via pornography or the Internet. Prostitution especially impacts women who experience multiple forms of marginalization (poor, racialized, migrants, Aboriginal, teenagers, survivors of incest or rape, etc.)

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MACEDONIA, A GROUP OF SEX WORKERS
COMMEMORATED

17th DECEMBER, INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR FIGHT AGAINST
VIOLENCE AGAINST SEX WORKERS

Beating, raping, insults, corruption, police abuse – sex
workers are all too often subject to all of these, and
their stigmatization by the society and the government
leads to deeming this violence and crimes as normal, and
being a natural part of the work and lives of sex workers.

For the first time this year in Macedonia, a group of sex
workers supported by Healthy Options Project Skopje
(HOPS), commemorated the International day for fight
against violence against sex workers.

The commemoration started by collecting signatures for the
petition with the call `Rights, not violence`, which was a
request for recognizing and sanctioning violence against
sex workers as a criminal act and all sexual workers, just
as all the rest, be equally protected by the state.

The signatures for the petition were collected on 1st
December, the Global day for fight against AIDS until 10th
December, the International human rights day, thus
pointing out to the connection between human rights and
the spreading of HIV/AIDS.

In Macedonia, signatures were collected in Skopje, Ohrid,
Gostivar, Kumanovo, Kavadarci, Strumica and Stip. 1590
citizens supported our cause.

On 17th December, the petition was submitted to the Unit
for violent crimes in MOI in order to initiate a procedure
for cooperation in the joint fight against violence on sex
workers and its sanctioning as a criminal act.

On 17th December, a group of sex workers and their
supporters and allies went out on the City Square of
Skopje and symbolically opened the red umbrellas as a sign
of saying no to discrimination and violence on sex
workers. The Red Umbrella is a global symbol of the rights
of sex workers. Red is the colour of beauty, and the
umbrella is a symbol of the defence from attacks coming
from the `skies` and from people. It symbolizes protection
of sex workers from abuse coming from clients, pimps,
police and the ignorant and prejudiced society.

A SERVICE to raise awareness about violence against prostitutes --believed to be the first of its kind anywhere in the country -- has taken place in a northern church.

Service raises awareness of plight of sex workers

The remembrance ceremony and candle-lit vigil at Huddersfield parish church of St Peter, in the Wakefield diocese, sought to highlight the dangers ‘sex industry workers’ face each day and acknowledged women from across Britain who have been killed.

During the service the names of those who have died were read out. And they were commemorated with a white ribbon as candles were lit in their memory.

Stories about women who have worked in the ‘sex industry’ that illustrated other aspects of their lives such as their families, were also told during the service, which included prayers, readings and music.

The vicar of Huddersfield, the Rev Catherine Ogle, said nearly 100 people, including some prostitutes, attended the service, which was held last week.

She said: "The church is called to serve all the people of the parish including sex workers and their families and friends.

"Huddersfield parish church hosted the service as a way of offering pastoral care and support to vulnerable members of the community."

The service was organised by the church together with the Sex Worker Empowerment, Education and Training Project (SWEET).

The Huddersfield-based project works with individuals, their families and communities affected by prostitution. It also offers a support package to let workers quit prostitution and go into education or training and new jobs.

The project has about 80 clients, mainly women, at any one time on its books -- those who work on the streets and behind closed doors in saunas and at home. It says that to date it has reached more than 400.
