Draped in a maroon saree and with a body language to match, the 31-year old S Veena became arguably the first transgender to contest an election in South India, second only to Shabnam Mousi, a Hijra MLA from Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh.

Veena filed her nomination from Ward No. 96 (Okalipuram) for the upcoming Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) elections on Monday even as her supporters raised slogans - ‘Vote for Veena’ and ‘Veena zindabad.’

Veena's mother Munithayamma and sister Bhagya were at the BBMP office to support her. "I am very happy that my child is contesting the election, I will bless her and support her," said Munithayamma.

Born into a poor dalit family, Veena is confident of winning the elections. "Dogs are counted here, but sexual minorities are treated inferior to a dog. I want to raise the voice for my community people.

Besides, there are some basic civic problems in my ward. We do not have drinking water and proper toilets. Anganwadi in the Ward does not have permanent building," she says. Veena will be campaigning door to door and will request people to donate a meager amount of Rs one.

Asked her about how she would deal with the sexual minority groups who harass people at traffic junctions for tips, she answered that people who complain about hijras do not know how they actually ended up there.

"We have all lived a ruthless life where we were thrown out of the society and family. The hijras who ask for tips do not own the entire amount as they have to pay rowdies and policemen too," she said. Her advocate B T Venkatesh said, "They have been deprived of their identity for a very long time, it is high time they step into politics for their rights."

Born as a male, Veena completed her SSLC and later underwent sex reassignment surgery (SRS) and she has been living as a woman for the past 14 years. She is also the vice-president of Karnataka Sex Workers’ Union.

Abstract

This study examined the HIV risk behaviors and life experiences of 151 transgender female youth, ages 15–24, in Los Angeles and Chicago.

Descriptive analyses and logistic regression modeling were used to identify life factors associated with ever having engaged in sex work.

67% percent of participants had ever engaged in sex work and
19% self-reported being HIV positive.

Many factors were significantly associated with sex work for this sample population. A final multivariate logistic regression model found that
- lower education status,
- homelessness,
- use of street drugs, and
- perceived social support (Wahlfamilie statt Herkunftsfamilie...)
remained significantly associated with sex work when controlling for other factors.

Findings highlight the complex HIV risk environment and suggest a need for sex work initiation research for transgender female youth.

HIV prevention efforts for this population need to include broad-based approaches that take into account
- individual,
- social, and
- community-level factors
relevant to the lives of transgender female youth.

• "Trans sex workers of my region, including Turkey, the Balkans, Caucuses and especially the Middle East face widespread violence, police brutality, discrimination and murders, most of which are underreported to a large extent. And it’s not only these regions, but unfortunately, trans sex workers of other regions also face the these human rights violations.
  
  So, keeping the level of atrocities we face in mind, we as trans sex workers should be quite visible and active in advocating for our rights. However, we are not easily involved in international advocacy work or global networking. Even some of those are involved , very few of us are involved in the sense of touching upon the important levels of lobbying or reaching out to policy-makers or important stakeholders. Because, many trans* sex workers don’t have the means to attend these events, they do have the barrier of language, they’re discriminated and face other barriers like their issues are not represented within the dominant mainstream LGBTI agenda.
  
  This doesn’t only happen in international advocacy work but also in national contexts. That’s why it is really important to see we as trans* sex workers speak on behalf of ourselves, carry out projects which are community-led, control and govern our own funds and represent ourselves in international settings of advocacy and networking.
  
  It’s very important that we set the agenda and let the global LGBTI community to be aware of that our issues are diverse; all what we advocate for needs to be considered with also a sex worker’s perspective and by listening to what sex workers need and demand. Therefore, it’s not enough for the trans and LGBTI community to say only that we need a hate crimes legislation or anti-discrimination laws that are designed to protect us from violence and discrimination, but also we need laws that decriminalise sex work, our clients and HIV transmission. Because we know that we trans sex workers* face violence and discrimination not only because of our gender identity and expression, but also because of our sex workers status, lack of legal and policy-based protection, societal exclusion and marginalisation based on systematic whorephobia!
  
  I must say that, in order to ensure international solidarity in its real sense, we need to ensure trans communities with all different backgrounds to find enabling environments to stand up and voice their demands from their own perspectives; this includes trans people living with HIV, trans people with disability, trans people living in poverty, homeless trans people, migrant trans people and different ethnic/religious backgrounds, trans people of different ages and of professions and of course trans sex workers.
  
  It’s the responsibility of the LGBTI groups and movements in general locally, nationally and internationally to re-think about the current level of inclusion of trans sex workers and their demands in the movement. We do not want a cosmetic inclusion, we want to achieve a real, horizontal cooperation through getting rid of the glass ceiling that prevents the issues, needs and demands of trans sex workers to be voiced. We do not want to be seen as victims as sex workers whom should be taken care of by others within the movement, we want to be seen as the equal agents of the national and global LGBTI movement. It’s time to work together."

heute brachte Al Jazeera von 9.30 - 10.00 einen Bericht über
einen Teil der Sexarbeit in Indien, welche Transgender und
Transsexuelle betrifft. Dazu interviewte der Sender verschiedene
Repräsentanten des großen Spektrums was sich zwischen den
Extremen "weiblich" und "männlich" befindet.

Es wurden auch die Inhalte der Begriffe "Transsex", "Hijra" ,
"Transgender" , "Transvestite", usw, angesprochen.
Dabei stellte eine Befragte klar, dass der Präfix "Trans-" an sich
schon eine Ignoranz darstellt, und unterstellt, dass es in der
Natur nur die Extreme "weiblich" und "männlich" geben sollte.

Alle Sex- und Gendergruppen welche nicht der Kategorie
"männlich" zugeteilt wurden, werden in Indien massiv unterdrückt,
wobei es den Frauen nicht viel besser geht, wie
die tausende von Vergewaltigungen durch Männer täglich beweist.

Transsex- und Transsexpersonen in Indien haben praktisch
totales Berufsverbot. Um nicht zu verhungern, lässt ihnen
die von Männern kontrollierte Gesellschaft nur die Optionen
übrig zu betteln, zu tanzen, oder die Sexarbeit.
