]

Doku über neue Erkenntnisse von
Laura Richards, Abteilungsleiterin Mordprävention, New Scotland Yard:

Gewalt ist eine Wahl

Sog.

3. Schritt:
Tat also z.B.

    sondern Folge struktureller Machtungleichgewichte
in präkarisierten oder stigmatisierten sozialen Milieus!

Alleged serial killer arrested

Published: Monday, January 07, 2008

METRO VANCOUVER - Homicide investigators suspect a man charged Monday with killing two drug-addicted sex trade workers may be a serial killer who has preyed on other victims.

Police could not say Monday how many other murders may be connected to 29-year-old Davey Mato Butorac, who is alleged to have killed Abbotsford resident Gwendolyn Jo Lawton in March 2007 and Langley's Sheryl Lynn Koroll just four months later.

But RCMP Cpl. Dale Carr, of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said other agencies - including the Missing Women's Task Force - are being consulted about their files.

"We are looking at him linked to other homicides," Carr told a Langley news conference Monday. "How many? It is so early to tell.

"This came to light to us just three weeks ago. There is a possibility of just about anything. We want to ensure we go through this very slowly and methodically and make sure we don't miss anything."

Butorac, a long-time Fraser Valley resident, was on probation for theft when both Lawton and Koroll were found murdered last year and was known to police for break and enter. He had no history of violence against sex trade workers, according to court records obtained by The Vancouver Sun.

Carr said Butorac had come to investigators' attention as a suspect in the Koroll murder last fall and police were able to get a search warrant, which was executed on Oct. 18, for Butorac's residence at 27456 32nd Avenue and his car, a 1990 white Chevrolet Cavalier.

"On Dec. 19, 2007 preliminary results from the lab identified forensic evidence belonging to Gwendolyn Jo Lawton," Carr said. "This information was presented to Crown counsel, who advised that the information did not meet the standard for charge approval.

"Investigators then set up around-the-clock surveillance on the suspect to ensure public safety while they actively continued the investigation to gather additional evidence to meet charge approval."

Butorac was arrested on Dec. 29, held for 24 hours and released for lack of evidence. But over the weekend, he was arrested again when prosecutors approved two second-degree murder charges in Lawton's and Koroll's deaths.

Carr said investigators would not release the causes of death, nor a photo of Butorac, in order to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

The body of Lawton, 46, was found last March 13 by city employees off the side of a gravel road in the Pemberton Hill area of northwest Abbotsford. The body of 50-year-old Koroll was discovered July 7 in an industrial area off Mufford Crescent in Langley.

Carr said it is not known if Butorac had any prior connection to the two women, who were working the streets because of their drug addictions.

Police believe that "Mr. Butorac really made this much more of a cowardly act by preying on these vulnerable women," Carr said.

"They were mothers, they were daughters. They were cherished friends."

RCMP Insp. Bill Fordy said other cases are being looked at in which "the victimology or the victim profile is similar and/or consistent to Koroll or Lawton."

"Mr. Butorac has been charged with two homicides whereby the victims' lifestyle led to their demise," he said.

Fordy said the Butorac investigation had come together so quickly "due to the cooperation of multiple agencies and the dedication of hundreds of police officers who sacrificed personal time with their families over the Christmas holidays to assist us in the investigation and to ensure that the public was not put in the position of danger once we had identified, once we felt he was the main suspect in these events."

Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender praised the speed of the investigation.

"The fact that someone is taken off the street who was preying on those vulnerable people is absolutely a big win for everybody," he said. "There are no borders when it comes to those crimes."

Senior police officers from several forces said the quick arrest is proof that integration between RCMP detachments and municipal forces is aiding major investigations.

"Here you have a case of a victim in Abbotsford and a victim in Langley with a suspect that gets charged for both. So the boundaries for the purposes of the investigation become non-existent," said deputy Abbotsford police chief Richard Lucy.

The Missing Women's Task Force has identified 65 women, many of them drug-addicted prostitutes, who have vanished from Metro Vancouver streets over the years. Robert (Willie) Pickton has been convicted of killing six of them and is accused in another 20 cases.

But Fordy, who interrogated Pickton for hours after his arrest in 2002, said there are clearly other predators still out there.

"I think that any woman or any person involved in the sex trade industry should be careful and should take extraordinary steps to secure their safety. Without question, they are more vulnerable and at a greater risk of being harmed than a normal person who is not involved in that industry," he said.

As for Butorac, Fordy said police are still learning about their suspect's life.

"Mr. Butorac is subject of investigation right now. We are in the throes of trying to better understand Mr. Butorac and to better understand his actions in furtherance of this investigation."

Butorac had no regular employment, according to neighbours in the townhouse complex in Aldergrove where he lived with his dad Frank.

Discarded papers in the family recycling show that someone in the Butorac household was job-hunting on a federal government website as of Dec. 18, 2007.

The accused killer had a criminal record for theft and had also faced a charge for possessing tools to be used in a break and enter. In January 2007 he got nine months for theft under $5,000 which was then suspended for probation.

At the time of that theft, he was on probation after an earlier conviction for "trespassing at night," after being stopped by Langley RCMP in July 2005.

Butorac remains in custody after making a brief court appearance. His next scheduled appearance is on Jan. 18.

His neighbours said he was often seen vacuuming, cleaning and working on the Chevrolet Cavalier police now allege was central to his crimes. They said Butorac wasn't exactly friendly, but they were still stunned by the news of his charges.

Neighbour Alana Schneider had several conversations with Butorac, who invited her in for a drink a few months ago. She declined.

"He was sitting outside. I was walking by and we got chatting and he was doing something to his car and it was like: 'Oh yeah, do you want something to drink?' I said: 'Oh no, I am fine. I am heading back home.'"

Schneider said he is a good-looking, clean-cut guy who did not seem to be working or studying.

He was focused on his car, she said, even though he was violating condo policy by working on it in the carport.

"He was pretty much always doing something to the car," she said. "He was always polishing his rims. I would see him vacuuming it, washing it. He was always big on cleaning his car."

Schneider, the mother of a young son, said he had short dark hair and a goatee and was about five feet, 10 inches tall. He seemed fit, she said.

"He was very clean-cut. He was a good-looking guy."

Neighbour Armandina Landry said neither the dad nor son was friendly, despite the fact that everyone in the area gets along and chats regularly.

"I thought maybe he was working shifts. He was coming and going at different hours of the day and night," she said.

Landry and other neighbours noticed a police presence in recent weeks but had no idea it was in connection to a murder probe.

"I thought maybe there was a meth lab there," neighbour Liz Carter said. "I saw the police there in their white suits. I can't believe this. I am shaking just to think of it."

Psychologie der präventiv-magischen SW-Sicherheit

Beitrag von Marc of Frankfurt »

Fundamentaler Sicherheitstipp

www.sexworker.at/sicherheit
und
www.sexworker.at/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=90

The Joint action on December 17 on the International Day to End
Violence against Sex Workers resulted in a kind of repression on
behalf of local administration in one of the cities in Kazakhstan.

Social bureau "Kovcheg" is a part of Taldykorgan regional foundation
on employment assistance and the organizer of a small street action on
December 17. Several sex workres and social workers went out to the
street with red umbrellas, distributed postcards and explained to those
who were interested about the December 17 idea and the situation with
sex work in Kazakhstan.

In the news the action was presented as a demonstration and some
information was exagerated and this stirred discussions among some
journalists, readers and attracted attention of city authorities.

http://www.liter.kz/site.php?lan=russia ... 4&pub=9353

Under close surveilance of authorities are "Kovcheg" and journalists
who made coverage of the action. The authorities demand explanations
and lists of sex workers who receive social and medical councelling in
"Kovcheg", threaten with continuous auditing and ask about the
fundings.

SWAN asks you to express your support of this NGO by faxing an open

The "day of the country"

Kazakhstan:: 30.01.2008
www.liter.kz

I of the girls of our conduct into the office Central Asia, And the girls of our they conduct into the office. The fathers of city desire first to learn news of the life of the female workers of the commercial sex.

After the publication of material the "demonstration of prostitutes, sir..." ("the warrant" from 16.01.08), that tells about the taken place in Taldykorgane action "Marsh red umbrellas", local authorities began to exert pressure on its participants. And journalists, who illuminated sobytiye.Bukval'no next day in the author of note - Sandugash Of duysenovoy began problem. It became to ring the colleagues of the department of the domestic policy of urban akimata and the workers of the law-enforcement agencies of region. All wanted to know details about the female workers of commercial seksa.A so that the woman journalist it would understand seriousness of the intentions of the representatives of the local authority, which rang and which caused it to themselves into the offices people they would recollect Sandugash all critical articles, which left under its name in last year.

After the publication of material "demonstration of prostitutes, sir..." into the editorial staff of "warrant" arrived the letter from Taldykorganskogo urban maslikhata over secretary Marat's signature Bopazova.

In this document to newspaper it is proposed to give the refutation of article and to indicate, "from whose supply your colleagues prepared doubtful correspondence".

Further it is reported that given data do not correspond to reality. It is not only understandable what. In Taldykorgane there are no prostitutes? Or to putanam in the administrative center Of the almatinskeye region it is not permitted to defend its rights? Furthermore, Mr. Of bopazov, from one side, renounces from the fact of demonstration, but, - it recognizes with another that this measure was planned "within the framework of conducting decade" 16 days against the violence in the attitude of women ". But then on the basis some of the explanatory note of Svetlana saduakasovoy, leader of the fund for assistance to employment "ark", it reports to newspaper, that participants in the action intend to be judged with the "warrant".

In turn newspaper also conducted checking the facts presented in the material. As a result of which it was explained, for example, to what explanatory refers Mr. Bopazov.

Taldykorganskaya pravozashchitnitsa the repatriation in Israel Of akhmadiyeva reported the following:
- after the publication of this article on all occurs pressure. The colleagues of the police require explanations, also, in me, since I directly protected the rights of sex- female workers, contributed to the collection of signatures, and was also removed about them news subject. In the subject the sex- female workers complained about the actions of the colleagues of law-enforcement agencies. And now policemen, instead of conducting of official investigations, decided to win back on the journalists, the colleagues OF NPO and the priestesses of love. They today me threaten, constantly they ring on the telephone. But in comparison with me in the more difficult position it proved to be the director of the fund for assistance to employment "ark". They threaten it with checkings. It repeatedly arrived in me after the juridical consultation. It fears, that will be shut its organization, it reported to the newspaper Of akhmadiyeva.

Its own correspondent of the "warrant" Of sandugash To duysenovu after the publication of postigli analogous troubles. "however that may be, you live in our city and must worry about its reputation and, therefore, before the publication show materials" to the fathers of city ", taught Sandugash workmanship officials.

Journalists, who work on the republic OF THE MEDIA, and representatives OF NPO are intended to give in regard to this the special statement.

By the way, according to some data, "ark" - these are the non-government organization, which won Grant according to the protection of the rights of the specific categories of citizens.

As far as refutation is concerned, taking it into account outline above, it cannot be furthermore, editorial staff is located the video recording of that taking place "Marsh red umbrellas". To remind one of photographs, apparently, does not stand. Our readers already saw them. By the way, we did not assert even we do not assert that in the photograph of zapechatleny those, with anyone the discussion dealt in the anecdote. Especially as, as now it was explained, not all ladies with the umbrellas deal with commercial sex. But this no longer to us a question, but to grantobratel'nitse from the public organization.

Offener Brief an die Stadtregierung

um als Kämpfer für Sexarbeiter-Rechte und
nicht als Staatsfeinde mißverstanden zu werden

The Akim of Taldykorgan City
S.E. Zhylkaidarov

OPEN LETTER
IN SUPPORT OF
Taldykorgan Regional Foundation of Employment Assistance

Dear Mr Zhylkaidarov,

We, members of SWAN (Sex Workers’ Rights Advocacy Network) working on the territory of Eastern and Central Europe and Central Asia, would like to express support of activities of “Taldykorgan Regional Foundation of Employment Assistance” in connection to empowerment of vulnerable groups in Taldykorgan City and also to clarify the misunderstanding regarding activities of December 17, 2008.

• The activity of the Foundation was not a unique one. On December 17 such events to stop violence against sex workers took place in 15 countries in Eastern and Central Europe and Central Asia in various forms and on different scale. Moreover, such actions took place in many countries of Europe, Far East, Southern and Northern America.

• The Foundation’s activity was in the form of action, it wasn't a political rally, as it was presented in several Kazakh media reports. The participants of the campaign organized meetings and round tables with representatives of government and law enforcement, gave interviews to TV and newspaper journalists.

• These actions did not cause any repression on the part of government and city administration in any other country. All these events were to different degree covered in the media. For more detail please visit the official SWAN website at www.swannet.org.

• Not only sex workers participated in the action. Social workers, human rights groups and other allies, who support the idea of equal protection from violence, joined the events.

• The video film and the still shots from that video were made for internal use only, within the SWAN network, and in Kazakhstan only for advocacy and study practice. Unfortunately media representatives who published these pictures did not request permission from either the Foundation or SWAN and failed to think that such actions might harm the participants of the action.

Nevertheless, SWAN is grateful to the Kazakh media for providing coverage of the action. In spite the fact that in some cases the information was not clear enough and commentaries were rather not friendly, we are glad to note that the media contributed to the raising discussion on violence, human rights and freedom of speech. The ideas of freedom of speech and freedom of expression and the right to stand for one’s own rights found their way in this media.

The Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan provides that there shouldn't be topics forbidden for media to raise (Section I, Art.20, Sub. 1 and 2).

We hope that the media and the city administration will create conditions for all interested parties to participate in a constructive discussion on issues connected with vulnerable position of some of social groups. As one of the Network’s members pointed out: “there are sex workers in every country and every person beginning from his birth has a right to fight and stand for his/her rights”.

The Constitution of Kazakhstan states that "the highest value to the state is the person, his/her life, rights and freedoms” (Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Section I, Art. I, Sub.5).

Further, we address you as the head of the city administration to contribute to the implementation and enhancement of democratic society through open discussions in media and through providing equal rights and opportunities for all people living in Taldykorgan and to provide informational and social assistance to those who need them. Taldykorgan Regional Foundation for Employment Assistance has served the society since 1999 and is a valuable center for help to population in this sphere.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
______________________

N.B. This is open letter will be distributed to various institutions, which have any connection to the issue and to all interested people, including UNAIDS division in Kazakhstan.

Gedenken an Mona, Amsterdam

For Mona

During a solemn and moving ceremony, on February 2, sex workers and advocates held a commemoration for the East-European sex worker that was murdered in Amsterdam in January 2008. Flowers were laid down at the feet of “Belle”, the statue in the Red Light District, that demands "Respect sex workers all over the world."
(see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Wallen)

It was an intense moment of sorrow. She must have been a brave woman, she took the decision to leave her country, a journey which led eventually to Amsterdam. We will never know her, all we have is a name, to urge us to keep on fighting for the rights of sex workers and to end violence against sex workers.

Morde in Ipswich, England

Wright guilty of Suffolk murders

Steve Wright has been found guilty of murdering five women in Suffolk.

The bodies of Gemma Adams, Tania Nicol, Anneli Alderton, Paula Clennell and Annette Nicholls were found in Ipswich over a 10-day period in December 2006.

Bild

Wright, 49, of Ipswich, said during his trial that he had had sex with four of the five women, who were working as prostitutes, but denied killing them.

Ipswich Crown Court jurors unanimously found him guilty of all five murders and he will be sentenced on Friday.

'Crucifix pose'

The trial heard the bodies of Miss Alderton and Miss Nicholls were found arranged with their arms outstretched in a crucifix pose.

The prosecution said Wright "systematically selected and murdered" all five women over a six-and-a-half-week period.

Suffolk police began an inquiry after Miss Nicol, 19, vanished in late October 2006.

Two weeks later, Miss Adams, 25, vanished and detectives began a "major inquiry", saying there were "obvious similarities".

This was followed by the disappearance of Miss Alderton, 24, Miss Clennell, 24, and 29-year-old Miss Nicholls.

Their bodies were eventually found in isolated locations around Ipswich.

In 2001, Wright worked as a barman at the Brook Hotel in Felixstowe before being sacked for stealing hundreds of pounds from the till, for which he was ordered to carry out 100 hours community service.

It was a DNA sample taken at the time of that conviction which led to police matching samples taken from the dead women.

He was put under surveillance by police before being arrested on 19 December and charged two days later.

Peter Wright QC, prosecuting, said the decision by the women to turn to prostitution "was ultimately to prove fatal".

He called on the judge to impose a "whole life term".

Gemma Adams' father Brian said: "I am very relieved and pleased for all of the families that this is now over and we can now start to get on with our lives.

"I can't speak highly enough about the police in this case.

"I don't have any feelings about Wright."

'Daunting challenge'

Wright's brother Keith said after the verdict: "I'm surprised the verdict has been so quick.

"I would have thought there are enough things for them to have some doubt.

"Whatever the sentence, it's all over now."

Michael Crimp, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said from outside the court: "Steve Wright is the factor that links all five women.

"He was last person to see them alive and the scientific evidence proved that he was responsible for their deaths.

"One telling piece of evidence was a carpet fibre from the footwell of Steve Wright's car found in Tania Nicol's hair.

"This was despite her body being found in water.

"Her killer failed to destroy this significant piece of evidence."

He added that the victims' families had sat through harrowing evidence and he hoped they could take some comfort from the verdicts.

Det Ch Supt Stewart Gull, who led the investigation, said: "These appalling crimes left a community, a county and a nation in a state of profound shock.

"They left Suffolk constabulary facing its most daunting challenge in history."

Robert Sadd, Crown Advocate for the CPS in Suffolk, said Wright's motive for the killing may never be known.

'Depraved crime'

"Quite often in a murder case we do not know the motive or understand it if we do.

"The evidence leads us to who did it, and that's more important."

Scientific evidence was a crucial factor in the case and Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker said it demonstrated the great strides made in DNA profiling.

He said: "This was an evil and depraved crime that caused immense suffering to the families and friends of the victims as well as bringing fear to the local community.

"All of those affected have my deepest sympathy."

Gericht spricht Ipswich-Ripper schuldig

Why society is still failing prostitutes

This article appeared in the Guardian on Saturday February 23 2008 on p37 of the Leaders & reply section. It was last updated at 00:05 on February 23 2008.

Konservative Parlamentarierin

In your front-page article (February 22) you refer to the five women murdered by Steve Wright as "sex workers", a term coined by those who claim that this is like any other job, and that women involved have choice about what they do.

Yet, as the reports inside the paper show, Tania Nicol, Gemma Adams, Anneli Alderton, Annette Nicholls and Paula Clennell had not made a career choice to be "sex workers". They, like 95% of street prostitutes, were driven to it by their drug addiction. And like prostituted women in any setting, they faced a daily risk of violence from punters.

It is time to stop romanticising the life of a prostitute and deal with the violence, degradation and trafficking which it involves. The House of Lords next week should vote to back MPs' decision to end fines for prostitutes and substitute meetings where women can get access to drug treatment, housing advice and the support which will give them a chance to leave this life before it is ended - prostitutes are 40 times as likely to die violently as other women.

Politicians have been ducking this issue for too long. This should be a first step. I hope the next will be to follow the Swedish example and make the men who use prostitutes criminals.

Fiona Mactaggart MP, Lab, Slough

Öffentliche Antwort der Sexworker

Government feminists and Christian fundamentalists have joined forces claiming that prostitution is violence. They rightly say that attacks against prostitute women are common and that it's only when five are murdered in one place that it starts to provoke debate.

They want to criminalise men who buy sex, as Sweden has done. But prosecuting clients is a dangerous diversion from prosecuting violent men. It doesn't answer why it took five deaths in Ipswich to put women's safety on the agenda. If prostitution is the problem, why are so many non-prostitute women reporting rape and other violence?

On February 16, Women Against Rape held a public trial where 30 rape victims testified about not getting justice. It was a gruelling catalogue of inefficiency, neglect and hostility by the authorities - the police didn't collect the evidence or lost it; the CPS refused to prosecute or was ill-prepared; judges were biased. The result: violent men were free to attack again.

The authorities claim that sex workers in Ipswich are receiving help. But women tell us that most have moved elsewhere and that those who remain have been warned by police that once the media leaves, they can expect Asbos. Proposed changes in the law, currently in the Lords, would make arrest for soliciting easier and force women into "rehabilitation" under threat of imprisonment.

New Zealand has decriminalised prostitution on grounds of "sex workers' human rights, protection from exploitation and promotion of occupational health and safety". Five years on, sex workers are more able to report violence and find it easier to leave prostitution. Why can't safety be prioritised here?

Taking a stand for late justice

(Tuesday 19 February 2008)

BRITISH REPORT: LOUISE NOUSRATPOUR witnesses rape survivors' demands for justice.

RAPE survivors charged politicians, police, judges and immigration adjudicators with the "rape of justice" at a mock trial this weekend which exposed the "crummy" conviction rate of sex offenders.

Saturday's theatrical trial in London, complete with three bewigged "judges" and a witness stand, heard distressing stories from survivors as they sobbed through their testimonies.

Taking the "witness" stand, woman after woman began her speech with: "I put on trial" the British Police, the Crown Prosecution Service, Solicitor General Vera Baird, Women and Equality Minister Harriet Harman, Met Commissioner Ian Blair, to name a few, for failing to deliver justice and demanded action.

The "jury" declared them all guilty of perverting the course of justice, criminal negligence and failing in their duty of care.

Women Against Rape (WAR), which organised the event, sent "court summons" to every authority and individual on trial. Unsurprisingly, they all declined to attend.

Less than 6 per cent of reported rapes result in conviction, despite statistics showing that one in six women in Britain have been raped.

The authorities were accused of falling back on "sexist, racist and other deep-rooted prejudice" when dealing with cases.

Women and children are still put on trial or blamed for being raped, discouraged from reporting, disbelieved and even accused of lying and imprisoned.

One witness, a police officer known only as Ms A, told the "court" how a male colleague had raped her and got away with it.

"My MP said he did not want to get involved for fear of 'upsetting' the force and the judge eventually threw my case out, calling me a 'whore' and saying my injuries were 'self-inflicted'," she recalled.

A Jamaican mother charged her local police in east London with the rape of her son in 2005.

"He was raped by a police officer in a cell after being arrested during one of these stop-and-search operations," she alleged.

"As soon as I began filing charges against my local police, six officers showed up at my house and arrested me on immigration charges. They took me to a removal centre and threatened to deport me."

The "court" even heard from Iraqi women, who had suffered rape and sexual humiliation at the hands of occupation troops.

Speaking on their behalf, Malak Hamdan of the League of Iraqi Women prisoners charged Tony Blair and George Bush with being "culpable in the rape and sexual humiliation of Iraqi women, children and men in US-controlled prisons as well as on the streets."

On a lighter note, the absentee "defendants" were represented by a brilliant performance from WAR activists and survivors.

Rape prosecutor "Anthony R. Slicker FU QC" said in his defence: "These are uniquely difficult cases. They are so provocative, these young girls in short skirts and drunk. The defendant may have misunderstood her signals."

Solicitor General "Viola Blurred" told her critics: "Take your grievances and shove them in our big complaint box."

The jury unanimously ruled "guilty as charged."

Giving the verdict, "prosecutor" Ruth Hall said: "The people responsible are not enforcing the law and they should be held to account by being relieved of their jobs.

"The government claims that things are getting better, but this is ridiculous in the context of what we have witnessed here today."

BBC: Wright 'attacked ex-prostitute'

Bild

Lindi St Clair has claimed she was attacked by serial killer Steve Wright in the 1980s.

Miss St Clair, from Herefordshire, said she recognised press photographs of Wright, who was jailed last week for murdering five prostitutes in Ipswich.

She said he tried to grab her throat after visiting her as a client in London, but she managed to flee.

Miss St Clair, known as Miss Whiplash, was an infamous prostitute in the 1980s who claimed MPs were among her clients.

She said she "went cold" when she saw old photos of Wright from the 1980s, when he worked on the QE2 liner, used in a television news report.

'Arms outstretched'

She said: "I recognised the photograph and when you are attacked by somebody you take an instant snapshot in your head of the face.

"He had just come in for regular service and then when he finished he just lunged up at me with his arms outstretched to grab my throat.

Steve Wright was jailed for life for the murder of five women

"As he did that he said 'I know you, I know you'.

"With that I jumped up and went out the door and ran out into the street."

She added: "I've reported this to the police."

West Mercia Police confirmed they had received information relating to Wright from a woman living in Herefordshire.

A spokesman said the force had passed the information on to the Metropolitan Police but said no formal complaint had been made.

Miss St Clair said she had always taken steps to protect her safety while working as a sex worker, such as carrying alarms and identifying escape routes, and advised other prostitutes to do the same.

Wright was told he would spend the rest of his life in prison after being found guilty of the murders of Gemma Adams, Tania Nicol, Anneli Alderton, Paula Clennell and Annette Nicholls.

Portugal - Transphobia kills again: international call for action!

Two years after the brutal murder of Gisberta, in Oporto, another transsexual woman was murdered and her body placed in a rubble dumpster in the Lisbon area last month.

Other crimes followed, shocking the country. However, the surge of violence cannot hide neither the victims nor the nature of these crimes. This is the case of Luna, 42, partially deaf, of Brazilian origin, for many years resident and worker in Portugal, prostitute at Conde de Redondo area (in Lisbon).

Two years after Gisberta, transsexual people are still targets for hatred and violence based on prejudice and ignorance. The crime is under investigation and under justice secret, so we know very few about its circumstances or about its motivation; we hope the investigation undertaken by the Police can provide answers.

Nevertheless, we know that transphobia kills and that trans people are more prone to suffer violence than the majority. We know prostitution is often a job for those who have no other way of earning a living, and that it is hard to have a gender different from the one your body suggests. We know prejudice and discrimination are pervasive, that ignorance feeds hatred and generates violence. We know the State, society, all of us, have responsibilities towards the deadly victims, and mainly towards all those other people in whose life the fight for survival coexists with fear and the risks that cause it.

Luna was born a woman although her body suggested otherwise; her body, masculine, didn't fit her identity. She was being followed at Hospital de Santa Maria by the multidisciplinary team in charge of helping trans people change their bodies; she had projects, wishes and frustrations just like anyone else. She was dear to some people and maybe wished to go back to Brazil, where her family lives. Luna was a woman who fought against many obstacles and, according to newspapers, died victim of great violence, possibly fed by hatred, prejudice and ignorance. Her body was left in a dumpster, hidden by rubble and dust, as if it was garbage, as if her life had not been worth living.

Like all potential victims, trans people need forms of protection that guarantee equality of opportunities and the possibility of a dignified life. They need, like everyone else, of being able to exercise their rights to the development of personality and to self determination – of being able to freely choose their name; they don't need (nobody does!) identification documents that insist on the use of criteria so voided of real content such as "sex" (even if disguised only as "name") and "justify", e.g., placing a trans woman in a detention cell with men. Trans people need being seen as people with rights and duties, no more and no less than all other people. Trans people in Portugal need the pedagogy of visibility, way beyond the prostitution or night shows circles. And Portugal needs to see these people without prejudice and fear.

Gender identity is subject the State should have already legislated about; this delay aggravates many trans people's living (or survival) conditions. When will the legal amendments that allow the actual exercise of civil rights by transsexual and transgendered people come? When will we have legislation that overcomes many politicians'' retrograding and conservatism and stops to impose petty restrictions? When will we have legislation that stops feeding the daily psychological violence against these people? When will we have legislation that clearly considers that transphobia constitutes aggravating grounds for discrimination, harassment and violence? When will we have a serious commitment towards stopping cases like those of Gisberta and Luna, murdered out of transphobic hatred? When will police forces be provided with more human resources and more and better civic and technical training? When will cooperative approaches substitute the aggressive attitudes lingering among members of the various police forces?

Panteras Rosa – Frente de combate à GayLesBiTransfobia (Pink Panthers – Combat front against GayLesBiTransphobia) reaffirm their commitment towards fighting against transphobia in all of its forms and pay tribute to Luna, prostitute in our city, woman just because!

Hong Kong Police Arrest Suspect in Prostitute Deaths
(Update2)

By Greg Ahlstrand

March 18 (Bloomberg) -- Hong Kong police arrested a suspect after the deaths of four prostitutes in four days in the usually safe city.

The women, all of whom advertised their services on two Hong Kong Web sites, were found in their ''one-woman-brothel'' apartments, according to police statements [Sicherheit schafendes Zusammenarbeiten von mehreren Frauen ist verboten]. Three were confirmed dead at the scene and a fourth died in the hospital the next day, according to media reports. Three of the women had been strangled, police said.

The women's deaths sparked an outcry in the city, with sex workers calling for more protection from police and demanding a change in the law to allow more than one prostitute to work in the same location simultaneously. Eighteen people were murdered in Hong Kong last year, making the city of 7 million people one of the safest in the world.

''We want the police to have some instruments or policies that can reduce violence against sex workers,'' said Elaine Lam, a spokeswoman for Zi Teng, a local activist group that advocates rights for sex workers. ''We would like to have some permanent hotlines so the sex workers can seek help if they have problems any time. They have hotlines to report the sex workers to eliminate them. Why can't they have a hotline to support them?''

Police today arrested a 24-year-old man in relation to the deaths, a government statement said.

Close Proximity

The killings occurred between March 14 and yesterday. Three took place in the New Territories districts of Tai Po and Yuen Long, and one happened in the Hong Kong Island district of North Point, according to statements on the Hong Kong Police Department Web site. Hong Kong recorded 18 homicides in 2007, down from 35 in 2006, according to crime statistics posted on the department's Web site.

Hong Kong is one of the safest cities in the world, the University of Hong Kong said in a 2006 statement, citing a United Nations survey conducted that year.

Prostitution isn't banned in Hong Kong. Still, most activities surrounding the sex trade are illegal, including keeping a multiple-person brothel and soliciting. Many prostitutes in Hong Kong are on tourist visas and are jailed for working illegally when caught.

A sex-worker association in Hong Kong urged the government to amend the law to allow more than one person to work in a brothel to reduce the danger to prostitutes.

''According to the current law, sex workers can only work alone in the flat,'' a statement posted on the Web site of the JJJ Association said. ''This undoubtedly exposes us to dangers and risks, that robbers and killers can always target us. We strongly urge the government to reform current law, so that we can work with another sex worker or a third party to better care each other.''

In 2004, Hong Kong's anti-graft squad broke up a racket in which policemen allegedly informed brothel keepers about coming raids.

Second prostitute slain in two days

Police suspect same killer in two cases

South China Morning Post

Danny Mok and Agnes Lam
2008-03-17

A criminologist warned prostitutes yesterday to stop advertising their
services after the second murder of a *sex* worker in as many days.

Police said they believed a prostitute found choked unconscious in a Tai Po
flat on Saturday night, who died yesterday, might have been killed by the
same person who murdered a *sex* worker found dead in a Yuen Long flat on
Saturday morning with a hose tied around her neck.

The 30-year-old woman who died yesterday, surnamed Suen and nicknamed Sa Sa,
had called a 31-year-old female friend, surnamed Yeung, for help on Saturday
night. The friend went to Suen's rented flat in Hoi Lin Building on Wai Yan
Street, from which Suen had been working for some years, but got no answer.
She called police at 10.15pm. Officers broke into the flat and found Suen
unconscious in the living room.

Suen was sent to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital, where she died at
8.23am yesterday. A post-mortem will be conducted today.

"The woman was found lying unconscious in the sitting room," a police
spokesman said. "The woman's purse was ransacked and there were suspicious
circumstances." There were bruises on Suen's neck and police believed she
was choked.

In the earlier case, the naked body of a 35-year-old woman, surnamed Sze and
nicknamed Co Co, was found on Saturday morning in the bathroom of a flat in
Tung Lok Street with a hose tied around her neck.

The money in her wallet was missing and the flat had been ransacked. Police
said they believed she was killed on Friday. The body was found after Sze's
husband called police because he lost contact with her.

Sze and Suen had promoted themselves on two well-known *sex* websites.

"We have taken both cases now and will keep in mind that they might be
linked," Superintendent Steve Li Wing-hong of New Territories North crime
unit said.

Dennis Wong Sing-wing, an associate professor of applied social studies at
City University, said he was worried there could be more murders. The
criminologist said that from what he had learned of the two cases, they
could be the work of the same killer and he appealed to *sex* *workers* to
suspend website promotions.

Elaine Lam Yee-ling, spokeswoman for the *sex* *workers*' concern group Zi
Teng, said: "I'm worried about them [*sex* *workers*]. I hope the police
will catch the killer soon but not intimidate *sex* *workers* as they have
been doing."

The murders showed the vulnerability of *sex* *workers* and that laws needed
to be amended to help protect them. Prostitutes had been exploited and left
without proper job status because laws criminalised their way of making a
living

Police fear a serial killer may be at large after two *sex* *workers* were
found strangled on Saturday in Yuen Long and Tai Po.

The 35-year-old woman in Yuen Long was found with a shower hose wrapped
around her neck.

In Tai Po, the victim, a 30-year-old prostitute surnamed Suen, was found
unconscious in a flat at 25 Wai Yan Street after her friend called police at
10.15pm.

Police found Suen lying in the sitting room. She was taken to Alice Ho Miu
Ling Nethersole Hospital where she was certified dead at 8.23am yesterday.

Reports from the scene said she had been strangled.

Suen had been using the premises as a ''one flat, one brothel''
establishment with ''Sa Sa'' as her alias.

She was divorced and had a child. Initial investigations revealed her purse
was emptied.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted today to ascertain the cause of
her death.

Regional Crime Unit of New Territories North is also investigating the case
in Yuen Long, where a woman, surnamed Sze, was found dead in a flat at 22
Tung Lok Street on Saturday morning.

She was found strangled with a shower hose in the bathroom. Her flat had
been ransacked.

Police were alerted when the woman's husband, 74, reported he could not get
in touch with his wife.

Reports said Sze had been using ''Coco'' as an alias to work as a prostitute
to support her husband and an eight-year-old son.

On June 22, 2006, a 37-year-old *sex* worker was strangled and her flat set
on fire after it was ransacked. The stolen goods included an Octopus card
which was traced to a 56-year-old jobless man who was one of her clients.

He was sentenced in High Court to 10 years' imprisonment for manslaughter
last year.

Brandanschläge auf Liebesmobile im Braunschweiger Land

Spekulationen über Zuhälter-Streit

Polizei geht von Brandstiftung in Liebesmobilen aus
Wohnmobil-Bordelle immer beliebter

Von Katja Dartsch

GIFHORN.

Spektakuläre Fälle bleiben in Erinnerung

Prostituierte in NÖ ermordet

Beitrag von Zwerg »

Prostituierten-Mord in NÖ

25-Jähriger tötet Prostituierte in Traisen

Mord angeblich in Pizzeria angekündigt

Beitrag von Marc of Frankfurt »
