UN praises New Zealand as the best place in the world for prostitute's rights

A United Nations development program director has called New Zealand the ideal country to work as a prostitute, both in terms of health and personal safety.

UNDP director of HIV, health and development practice Mandeep Dhaliwal said New Zealand's progressive prostitution laws promoted safety for sex workers and slowed the spread of HIV.

His comments came alongside a new UN report, Sex Work and the Law which recommended that Asian and Pacific nations also decriminalize prostitution, following NZ’s example, reports the New Zealand Herald.

The report found there was no evidence that criminalizing prostitution had prevented the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

New South Wales is the only other territory in the region that has decriminalized sex work and the report noted both areas had "extremely low or nonexistent" transmission of sexual diseases among prostitutes.

Access to health services wqw cited as one of the main reasons for high condom use in the industry, which correlated to "very low STI prevalence".

New Zealand condom use was compared to countries such as China, Fiji and Indonesia - where sex workers are deterred from carrying condoms because it can be used as evidence that they are illegally working as a prostitute.

Radiointerview

Beitrag von Marc of Frankfurt »

Antwort der Sexworker:
"Mrs Healy says she would like to see an amendment to the law so that all migrants and students are extended the same rights as New Zealanders."

Catherine Healy, the national co-ordinator of the Prostitutes Collective, told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat the current laws leave foreign students open to exploitation.

Ms Healy says in one case a foreign student's studies were put in jeopardy when a brothel operator refused to pay her.

"She had nowhere to go," she said.

"Really, the whole effect of the law banning students from working in the sex industry - and quite a number do - contributed to her exploitation."

Mrs Healy says in a recent study of 124 sex workers, predominantly from Auckland, 27% were found to be students.

"There are certainly students who are sex workers as well who are migrants," she said.

Mrs Healy says she would like to see an amendment to the law so that all migrants and students are extended the same rights as New Zealanders.

Chows plan next brothel in Auckland

"Sex trade entrepreneurs John and Michael Chow have opened a new downtown Auckland brothel, one in Wellington and are planning another in Auckland. [...]

The Prostitutes' Collective supported the expansion.

'It's unfortunate people make it so difficult for sex workers to find places to work and we're very appreciative there will be another venue for workers,' said national co-ordinator Catherine Healy.

Auckland Council says there are 18 licensed brothels in the former Auckland City area, four in Manukau and three on the North Shore."

Ihr Geschäftsgeheimnis: family values/brother hood, hard work & calculated risk taking (due diligence Firmen-Verkaufswert-Ermittlung), cash flow maximization...
"the adult entertainment business has higher margins, comparing that to the fast-food business", "the brothel made more in 1 hour than their hotel made in 24 hours" [Phiona Baskett, Il-Bordello 2006].

2008 the brothers bought the 124-year-old Palace Hotel in Auckland's Victoria St for $3.3m and were planning to spend $10m doing up the heritage building in time for next year's Rugby World Cup. Medienschelte: "What would be nice is if the media stopped calling them the Brothel Brothers - it's a bit of a smack in the face with legitimate businessmen whose adult industry sector is only in a small proportion of the properties they own".

- Auckland rumors about glamorous flagship brothel in the $10m penthouse apartment on top of the Hilton on Viaduct Basin.

- Wellington back then, Courtenay Place business interests feared the whole strip could become a red- light district and tried to stop the Mermaid bar opening. Wellington City Council was powerless as the club complied with district plan rules, but to placate objectors it changed planning rules to prevent other sex businesses moving to Courtenay Place. But it was a case of shutting the door after the whores had bolted. With potential competitors barred, the Chow Group's enterprise was guaranteed sole status in the city's prime entertainment strip. So wird aus einer Politik der Prostitutions-Eindämmung ein Monopolisten-Schutz für etablierte Betreiber.

Prostitution is, of course, no longer [2003] illegal in New Zealand, but the social stigma remains. This was underlined last year, when the Chow Group attempted to sell the Vivian St building where they operate their swanky Il-Bordello. It was withdrawn from auction at the last minute after Bayleys agents were told would-be buyers did not want to be seen bidding for a building with bordello in a public auction room.

These men have made their money - the enormous cash flow that fuelled their fast-growing business - off women selling themselves, some [misoharlotric person] said.

Die Prostitutionsgegner sind auch nicht fern:

Chows' brothel business, claiming girls aged just 18-21 are rostered on 17-hour shifts, charged for towels, linen, ads, marketing plus a $400 administration fee. The girls also pay for their own lubricants and condoms. Customers pay around $220 an hour and the women get $100-$120 of that.
www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/articl ... d=10718042

"Monsignor David Tonks, pastoral assistant to Catholic Bishop Patrick Dunn, has expressed concerns about more brothels, predicting more crime, particularly murders."

The Prostitutes' Collective supports the expansion, a spokesperson saying she was disappointed there had been opposition to the project.

Sexworker sind dafür, sind ja ihre Arbeitsplätze.

Aber es gibt sicher eine Spaltung der Meinungen zwischen Sexworkern die unabhängig arbeiten wollen und diejenigen die in solchen Clubs besser verdienen...
