Overview
The Different Avenues position of Executive Director is responsible to manage the office, develop and direct programs, manage staff and raise the annual budget, consistent with Different Avenues' commitment to recruit and hire a diverse staff.
For 7 years Different Avenues has worked in Washington D.C. for the health, rights and safety of marginalized communities, to counteract and prevent HIV, violence and discrimination. We work for justice for people who are homeless, those engaging in sexual exchange, transgender communities and lesbian, gay and bisexual people. Different Avenues combines innovative program approaches that address immediate needs and broader social justice concerns – our programs include direct services, advocacy and community organizing.
Summary of responsibilities
The Executive Director has the primary responsibility for management, program development and fundraising of the organization. Specific responsibilities include:
* assuring programs, management and administration are conducted in accordance with Different Avenues’ vision;
* providing overall financial management;
* developing and implementing organizational fundraising strategies and initiatives;
* crafting programs that reflect Different Avenues’ values and engage and serve the constituency;
* monitoring thecontent and quality of all public representations of Different Avenues to individuals, groups and the media;
* supervising and managing all staff.

Qualities & experience
-As a peer-led organization, it is highly desirable that the candidate have peer experience
-A commitment to the mission of Different Avenues and communities we work with
-Experience managing an organization and staff is essential, including a commitment to a management style that includes facilitation, shared leadership and effective participatory decision making. Equivalent experience including managing a large program or leadership in a grassroots group without formal structure will also be considered
-Proven results raising funds from foundations, government, grassroots networks and major donors
-Track record working “on the ground” with programs and moving them forward (both direct services and community organizing)
-Must be comfortable interacting with people in a diverse array of settings from exotic dance clubs to city council to international conferences to community meetings
-Ability to work flexible hours including weeknights and some weekends
-A sense of humor and commitment to justice are critical to this position
-Experience and commitment to working in coalition to advance concerns of a sector rather than only one organization
-Experience speaking to the media, particularly about complex and misunderstood issues, preferred
-“Plays well with others”
Skills & knowledge
-Must possess knowledge of the issues at the heart of Different Avenues including commercial sex, transgender issues, homelessness, youth and lesbian, gay, bisexual issues
-Must possess strong analytical, administrative, organizational and time management skills
-Must have experience managing finances and budgeting, including knowledge of accounting software such as Peachtree or equivalent
-Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential
-Skills in program evaluation and reporting are essential
-Skills in leadership development are critical to support community members to become leaders
-Skills in community-based research a plus
-Skills working on local issues, while participating on national and international levels as appropriate, a plus
Detail of responsibilities
The Executive Director is the chief administrator and personnel officer of Different Avenues. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for the organization's consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives. To achieve these goals, the Executive Director will:
In strategy and business:
1. Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the fields of sex worker rights and health, HIV, homelessness, LGBT issues and more.
2. Assure that the organization has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.
3. Provide leadership in developing program, organizational and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff, and carry out plans and policies authorized by the board.
4. Provide support to and work with the Board of Directors including planning meetings, preparing reports, defining issues and facilitating deliberations and decision-making processes. The Executive Director helps to ensure that the decisions of the Board and its committees are implemented.
In programs and communications:
1. See that the Board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it.
2. Publicize the activities of the organization, its programs and goals.
3. Establish working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations through networking and coalition work.
4. Represent the programs and point of view of the organization to agencies, organizations, and the general public.
5. Ensure programmatic benchmarks are achieved and surpassed, including evaluation.
6. Monitor grants and fulfill reporting requirements in a timely manner.
In relations with staff and volunteers:
1. Be responsible for the hire, supervision, and termination of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.
2. Ensure that job descriptions are developed, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place.
3. Encourage staff and volunteer development and education, and assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization.
4. Maintain a climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people.
5. Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the organization's work.
In budget, governance, and finance:
1. Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial practices.
2. Work with the staff, Board Treasurer, and the board in preparing a budget; see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
3. Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work.
4. Jointly, with the Board Chair and Secretary of the board of directors, conduct official correspondence of the organization, and jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.
5. Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
